JOB DESCRIPTION
PICU nurses are responsible for providing care to children in intensive care units to patients that are unstable and require consistent monitoring. These nurses typically work in either community hospitals or specialty hospitals to monitor a wide range of ailments, from common childhood diseases to life-threatening illnesses. Their main duties include monitoring patients, administering medication and treatments, and using equipment such as catheters, intravenous lines, and feeding tubes.
New hires may be eligible for a hiring bonus of up to $18,000
DUTIES
- Provides aged and culturally appropriate care to patients.
- Consults and coordinates with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans.
- Monitors patient’s vital signs, such as blood pressure, breathing, and heart rate, and initiates corrective action whenever the patient displays adverse symptomatology.
- Follows continuous cardiac and respiratory monitor readings, such as EKG tracings, O2 stats, and CVP/arterial line waveforms, if applicable, and reports any observed changes.
- Tracks urine output.
- Changes dressings, inserts catheters, start IVs (both central venous & arterial)
- Administers infusion therapy, including IV fluids, antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, and electrolytes.
- Monitors and adjusts specialized equipment used on patients, such as ventilators.
- Prepares and administers and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments.
- Assists treating physician during examination, treatment, and procedures, which can include life-saving situations.
- Analyzes lab results.
- Assists with the insertion or discontinuation of CV catheters, arterial lines, external ventricular drains, epidural catheters, and endotracheal tubes, Foleys.
- Provides education, information, and emotional support to the patient’s family and caregivers.
- Records all care information concisely, accurately, and completely, in a timely manner, and in the appropriate format, and on the appropriate forms.
- Performs other position-related duties as assigned, depending on the assignment setting.
- Keeping organized and following patient care plans exactly.
- Administering medications and using medical equipment.
- Communicating clearly and honestly with people from all backgrounds.
- Keeping good records and maintaining patients’ charts.
- Using basic math skills adequate for dosage calculations.
- The ability to work as part of a team in an acute care facility/hospital.
- Standing for long periods, lifting moderate weight, and working in environments where there may be infectious material.
- And other duties as required.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) certification
- A valid nursing certificate, BSN, or MSN degree from an accredited college or university.
- A valid unencumbered RN license for the State of California.
- The appropriate license to work in their state/county.
- NPR-Neonatal Resuscitation Program Certification.
- BLS certification.
- ACLS certification. (Preferred)
- Must have at least 12 months of relevant consecutive acute care experience in this specialty.
- Current vaccinations and health clearance certification.
- Excellent knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques.
- Must have previous experience with starting IVs.
- High-level interpersonal skills and the ability to connect with patients during stressful experiences.
- Strong organizational abilities and good communication skills
- Fluent in English.

HOURS OF OPERATION
Full-Time Night Shifts
- 12 hour shifts, 36 hours per week
COMPENSATION
- $78,000-145,000 Annually
