What are the responsibilities and job description for the Experienced Small Engine Technician position at Topsham Tractor And Equipment?
Experienced Small Engine Technician
Maine Tractor Company – Topsham Tractor
Full-Time
About Maine Tractor Company
Maine Tractor Company is a growing tractor and outdoor power equipment dealership serving homeowners, landscapers, contractors, and property owners throughout Maine. We take pride in providing professional sales and service support and building long-term relationships with our customers.
We are looking to add an Experienced Small Engine Technician to our service team who is confident diagnosing problems, completing repairs, and getting equipment back into our customers' hands.
The Position
The Small Engine Technician will be responsible for the diagnosis, service, and repair of a wide variety of outdoor power equipment. This includes zero-turn and riding mowers, chainsaws, trimmers, blowers, generators, wood chippers, and other small-engine equipment.
This is not strictly a basic maintenance position. We are looking for someone with the experience and mechanical ability to properly diagnose the cause of an issue and complete the necessary repair, from routine service and electrical troubleshooting to major component and engine replacement.
Our dealership primarily works with Kawasaki, Kohler, and Briggs & Stratton engines, so previous experience with these manufacturers is strongly preferred.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair small gasoline engines and outdoor power equipment
- Service and repair zero-turn, riding, and other commercial/residential mowers
- Diagnose and repair two-stroke handheld equipment, including chainsaws, trimmers, and blowers
- Work on generators, wood chippers, and other engine-powered equipment
- Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, fuel, and hydraulic systems
- Perform major repairs when necessary, including engine removal and replacement
- Diagnose starting, charging, ignition, fuel-delivery, overheating, and performance issues
- Repair mower decks, drive systems, belts, pulleys, spindles, PTO systems, and related components
- Use service manuals, wiring diagrams, diagnostic equipment, and manufacturer resources to accurately identify problems
- Perform preventative maintenance and scheduled services
- Clearly document diagnostic findings, required repairs, parts used, and work completed
- Communicate with our Service Writer and Parts Department to keep jobs moving efficiently
- Complete work to manufacturer and dealership quality standards
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area
Qualifications
- Previous professional experience repairing small engines, mowers, outdoor power equipment, or similar equipment
- Strong mechanical aptitude and diagnostic ability
- Experience with Kawasaki, Kohler, and/or Briggs & Stratton engines strongly preferred
- Knowledge of two-stroke and four-stroke engine operation and repair
- Ability to diagnose electrical and mechanical problems rather than simply replace parts
- Familiarity with mower hydraulic and hydrostatic drive systems is preferred
- Comfortable completing major repairs, including engine replacement
- Ability to read wiring diagrams, service manuals, and technical documentation
- Must be organized, dependable, and capable of managing multiple repair jobs
- Must take pride in completing quality work and correctly diagnosing equipment
- Valid driver's license preferred
What We're Looking For
We are looking for more than someone who can change oil, replace filters, and perform basic maintenance. The right candidate should be a technician and problem solver who is comfortable taking a customer concern, diagnosing what is actually wrong, and seeing the repair through to completion.
We value technicians who are dependable, organized, willing to continue learning, and take pride in their workmanship. Experience with tractors or larger equipment is certainly a plus, but the primary focus of this position will be small engines, mowers, and outdoor power equipment.
