What are the responsibilities and job description for the Chief Human Resources Officer position at The Newport Group - Executive Recruiters?
Our client who is moving to the Los Angeles area is seeking a senior human resource officer for their company
We are seeking a seasoned, hands-on Chief Human Resources Officer to lead our people strategy across a high-growth, multi-state manufacturing footprint. This isn't a "ivory tower" executive role; you will be expected to dive into the details of workforce planning, labor relations, and operational HR while simultaneously serving as a strategic advisor to the CEO and Board.
As our CHRO, you will harmonize HR practices across multiple locations, ensuring our culture of safety and excellence translates from the front office to the factory floor.
Key Responsibilities
- Operational Leadership: Oversee all HR functions including payroll, benefits, compliance, and risk management across multiple states (CA experience is a must).
- Strategic Talent Acquisition: Build robust pipelines for both skilled trades/labor and corporate leadership to support a 1,000-person workforce.
- Performance & Culture: Standardize performance management and training programs that resonate with a diverse, multi-site employee base.
- Labor & Employee Relations: Act as the lead on complex employee relations issues; experience with wage and hour laws in manufacturing environments is critical.
- Safety & Workers' Comp: Partner with Operations to maintain a "safety-first" culture, overseeing workers' compensation and OSHA compliance.
- Total Rewards: Design and manage competitive compensation and benefits structures that attract and retain talent in a tight labor market.
Requirements
- Experience: 15 years of progressive HR leadership, with at least 3 years in a "Head of HR" or senior executive capacity.
- Industry Context: Proven track record in Manufacturing, Construction, Materials, or Real Estate. You must understand the nuances of a "blue-collar" workforce.
- Multi-state Expertise: Deep knowledge of federal and state labor laws, with specific mastery of California labor code.
- Scale: Experience managing HR for a mid-market company (500–1,500 employees).
- Attributes: You are a "doer" who can pivot from a board meeting to a plant floor walkthrough without missing a beat.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree required; SPHR/SHRM-SCP or Master’s degree preferred.
