Staff Project Accountant- Construction Industry
Location: Montgomery County, MD (Hybrid)
Compensation: 80,000-100,000 bonus

We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Staff Accountant to join a growing construction client in Montgomery County, MD. This position will support the accounting and finance team with a strong focus on project-based accounting, project financial reporting, subcontractor administration, billing, payroll, and compliance activities. The ideal candidate will have prior experience in the construction industry and a solid understanding of job costing and project financial management.
This role offers the opportunity to work closely with project managers and operations leadership to help ensure accurate financial reporting and successful project execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Support day-to-day accounting operations related to construction projects and corporate accounting functions
- Maintain and monitor project budgets, job cost reports, and project financial performance
- Assist with preparation and review of client billings, progress billings, and contract invoicing
- Process and reconcile subcontractor invoices, lien waivers, retainage, and supporting documentation
- Ensure compliance with subcontractor insurance requirements, contracts, and project documentation
- Support weekly and bi-weekly payroll processing, including certified payroll reporting when applicable
- Assist with month-end close activities including journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reporting
- Track project expenses and help identify cost variances or budget discrepancies
- Partner with project managers to review project status, committed costs, and forecast updates
- Assist with accounts payable and accounts receivable functions as needed
- Maintain organized financial records and ensure compliance with company policies and accounting standards
- Participate in process improvement initiatives to enhance accounting and operational efficiency
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field
- 2 years of accounting experience within the construction industry preferred
- Experience with project-based accounting, job costing, and construction financial processes
- Knowledge of subcontractor management, billing, payroll, and compliance requirements
- Familiarity with AIA billing, WIP schedules, and retainage accounting is preferred
- Proficiency with accounting systems and Microsoft Excel
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across departments
- Exposure to ERP/accounting platforms such as Sage, Viewpoint, CMiC, or Foundation
- Understanding of certified payroll and wage requirements is a plus
Salary : $80,000 - $100,000
