What are the responsibilities and job description for the Human Resources Manager position at Talent Edge Recruiting?
Human Resources Manager
A well-established, employee-owned general contractor with a long-standing reputation for excellence is seeking a hands-on HR Manager to build and lead their HR function from the ground up. This is a rare opportunity to step into a true “blank slate” role—owning and shaping HR strategy, processes, and infrastructure for a tight-knit, highly tenured team of 140 employees.
Why This Role Stands Out:
- Build something from scratch – no legacy HR structure to untangle
- High visibility – work directly with executive leadership
- Stable, established company with decades of success in complex construction projects
- Employee-owned organization (ESOP) with strong long-term incentives
- Opportunity to make a lasting cultural and operational impact
This is a one-person HR department (with payroll support) responsible for designing, implementing, and owning all HR functions across the business.
You’ll step into a company with strong foundations but no formal HR infrastructure, giving you full ownership to:
- Build and implement HR policies, processes, and best practices
- Manage benefits administration, including open enrollment
- Oversee employee relations across a tenured workforce
- Partner closely with leadership on compliance, performance, and culture
- Support payroll and ensure alignment with HR processes
- Maintain and evolve the employee handbook and internal policies
- Handle workers’ comp, compliance, and reporting (including ESOP-related responsibilities)
What They’re Looking For:
- 5 years of HR experience, ideally in construction or a similar field environment
- Experience building or revamping HR processes from scratch (or being the first HR hire)
- Comfortable operating as a true standalone HR leader
- Thick-skinned, direct communicator who can navigate a no-nonsense culture
- Proven longevity and stability in prior roles (this is critical)
- Bachelor’s degree required; HR certifications are a plus
- Must be comfortable working onsite in NYC
Compensation & Benefits:
- Base plus annual bonus
- Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) with strong contribution potential
- 401(k) with match
- Comprehensive medical (high employer contribution), dental, and vision
- 11 paid holidays generous PTO
- Long-term stability within an employee-owned company
Culture Snapshot:
- Direct, straightforward communication style
- Highly tenured workforce with strong institutional knowledge
- “Roll up your sleeves” environment—not for someone who wants a purely strategic role without execution
- Built for someone who thrives in ownership, autonomy, and accountability
If you’re someone who wants to own HR end-to-end, build real structure, and leave a lasting mark on a growing organization, this is the role.
We look forward to reviewing your application!
