Join a growing mechanical contracting company in a pivotal accounting role where your technical expertise and ownership mindset will directly influence financial accuracy and operational decisions. This is a hybrid direct hire opportunity for an ambitious accountant ready to step into a true manager-level position and help shape processes during a period of system and organisational change.
About the Role:
You will take full ownership of the general ledger and core accounting processes, ensuring accurate, timely, and well-controlled financial reporting for a multi-entity mechanical contractor. Working closely with leadership, you will be a key contributor in refining accounting procedures, supporting ERP transitions, and providing insights that support project and business performance. This role offers significant scope to build structure, improve controls, and grow into a long-term finance leader within the organisation.
Key Responsibilities:
* Own the general ledger close process, including preparation and review of journal entries, account reconciliations, and variance analysis.
* Perform detailed balance sheet reviews and maintain robust internal controls across all accounting cycles.
* Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
* Support and help lead the transition to new ERP systems (Sage and ServiceTitan), including data validation, process mapping, and user testing.
* Partner with operations and project teams to ensure accurate recording of project-related transactions and cost allocations.
* Identify and implement process improvements to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and control within the accounting function.
* Assist with weekly multi-union payroll processing on Paychex, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely submission.
* Collaborate with external auditors and tax advisors by providing schedules, documentation, and explanations as needed.
Key Requirements:
* 4-5 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally including time in public accounting or industry with increasing responsibility.
* Strong general ledger experience, including hands-on account reconciliations, balance sheet reviews, and month-end close.
* Demonstrated discipline around internal controls and documentation.
* Proven ability to work independently, prioritise tasks, and manage deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
* High level of attention to detail combined with the ability to see patterns, trends, and anomalies in financial data.
* Comfortable working with and learning new ERP systems and accounting tools.
* Strong communication skills with the ability to explain financial information clearly to non-finance stakeholders.
Desirable Skills:
* Experience with construction industry accounting, including percentage-of-completion revenue recognition.
* Background in mid-tier public accounting serving construction or project-based clients.
* Prior involvement in ERP implementations, upgrades, or system migrations.
* Experience with multi-union or complex payroll environments, ideally using Paychex.
Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in Accounting or closely related field required.
* CPA designation strongly preferred; candidates actively pursuing CPA or having completed parts of the exam are highly regarded.
* Ongoing professional development in accounting, audit, or financial reporting considered an asset.
If you are a driven accounting professional ready to take ownership, step into a manager-level role, and grow with a dynamic mechanical contractor, we encourage you to apply.
