About the Role:
As Controller, you will own the full accounting function for a growing construction organization, ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and timely insight for leadership. You will oversee day-to-day accounting operations while driving process improvements that support project performance and cash flow. Working closely with senior management, you will provide the financial visibility needed for effective decision-making and sustainable growth.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee all general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and job cost accounting activities for the construction business
- Manage month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accurate and timely financial statements and reports
- Monitor and analyze job cost reports, WIP schedules, and project margins to support project managers and leadership in financial decision-making
- Develop, implement, and maintain robust internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures tailored to construction operations
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team, setting clear expectations and ensuring high standards of accuracy and accountability
- Partner with senior leadership to prepare budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections, highlighting risks and opportunities
- Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and financial institutions, ensuring compliance with all regulatory and reporting requirements
Key Requirements:
- Recent, hands-on accounting leadership experience within the construction industry
- Strong track record of stable employment with demonstrated progression and responsibility
- Proven experience managing full-cycle accounting, including month-end close and financial statement preparation
- Solid understanding of construction-specific accounting practices such as job costing, WIP, retention, and project billing
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing and developing an accounting or finance team
- Advanced proficiency with accounting software and strong Excel skills
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational abilities with high attention to detail
- Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across operations and executive leadership
Desirable Skills:
- Experience with construction-focused ERP or project management systems
- Background in both commercial and/or residential construction environments
- Prior involvement in process improvement, system implementations, or scaling finance functions
- Experience supporting bonding, banking relationships, and surety requirements
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- CPA or CMA certification preferred but not required
- Additional coursework or certifications in construction accounting or financial management beneficial
