The Assistant Residential Director (ARD) assists in creating and maintaining a safe, structured, and supportive residential environment that promotes student growth, character development, leadership, and academic success. As a member of the Residential Life Team, the Assistant Residential Director serves as a mentor, supervisor, and positive role model for boarding students while working collaboratively with Residential Directors, faculty, staff, parents, and administration to ensure the success and well-being of every student.
Essential ResponsibilitiesStudent Supervision & Development
- Supervise boarding students and help maintain a safe, orderly, and supportive residential environment.
- Build positive relationships with students through mentorship, accountability, and encouragement.
- Promote character development, leadership, responsibility, and personal growth consistent with Southern Prep's mission.
- Enforce all school policies, residential procedures, and student expectations fairly and consistently.
- Address student behavioral concerns promptly and document incidents as required.
- Conduct room inspections and ensure dormitory cleanliness and maintenance standards are upheld.
- Monitor student attendance, accountability, and curfew compliance.
- Assist with student check-in, check-out, transportation, and campus transitions.
Residential Life
- Assist in planning, coordinating, and supervising recreational, educational, and community-building activities for boarding students.
- Foster a positive dormitory culture that encourages respect, responsibility, and teamwork.
- Support students experiencing academic, emotional, or social challenges and communicate concerns to the Residential Director and appropriate school personnel.
- Respond appropriately to student emergencies and medical situations following school protocols.
Communication
- Maintain regular communication with the Residential Director regarding student progress and concerns.
- Collaborate with faculty, coaches, advisors, counselors, and administrators to support student success.
- Complete required reports, incident documentation, and residential records in a timely manner.
Leadership
- Serve as a positive role model in professionalism, appearance, communication, and conduct.
- Assist Residential Directors with the daily operation of the residence halls.
- Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and required campus events.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Experience working with adolescents in a residential, educational, youth development, or similar environment preferred.
- Strong leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
- Ability to build positive relationships while maintaining appropriate boundaries and accountability.
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Successful completion of all required background checks and fingerprinting.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to walk campus extensively.
- Ability to climb stairs multiple times daily.
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to respond quickly to emergencies.
Work Schedule
Southern Preparatory Academy operates a residential boarding program 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Assistant Residential Directors are members of a team responsible for ensuring continuous supervision and support of boarding students.
Work schedules are flexible and are assigned based on the operational needs of the Academy. Shifts may include mornings, afternoons, evenings, and occasional holidays.
- Assistant Residential Directors will work one scheduled weekend per month as part of the rotating residential coverage schedule.
- While schedules may vary from week to week, employees will not be scheduled to work more than forty (40) hours in a workweek unless otherwise authorized by the Academy.
- Assistant Residential Directors may occasionally be asked to adjust their schedule to assist with student arrivals, departures, special events, emergencies, or other campus needs while remaining within the established forty (40)-hour workweek whenever practicable.

- Successfully complete all required training and professional development.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Residential Director, Dean of Students, or President.

Pay: $33,000.00 - $35,000.00 per year
