What are the responsibilities and job description for the Accountant/Bookkeeper position at Smith County?
The Accountant/Bookkeeper performs a variety of bookkeeping tasks in the Property Tax division of the Tax Office.
- Reconcile daily receipts (which include cash and electronic transactions) collected to Property Tax software reports. Prepare daily bank deposits and ACH transfers to taxing jurisdictions.
- Performs data entry, which balances monthly bank statements, monthly jurisdiction reports, daily transfers, and deposits. Ensure accuracy of reports and compliance with applicable statute.
- Responds to routine questions from the public concerning taxes, fees or revenues collected.
- Works closely with the Tax Assessor-Collector and Chief Deputy.
- Works with internal auditors, as well as external auditors.
- Professionalism, patience and good demeanor.
- Knowledge of modern office procedures and equipment use.
- Able to count and handle large sums of cash and checks.
- Knowledge of basic bookkeeping, accounting principles, maintenance of fiscal and accounting records.
- Must be able to compose business letters.
- Use 10-key calculator by touch.
- Able to type at least 60 wpm.
- Experience with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Google and Microsoft Edge.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Three (3) or more years of experience in bookkeeping, banking, payroll, accounting, customer service or related work.
- Daily sitting, standing, walking, stooping, bending, pulling, reaching and lifting of books and files, weighing 40 pounds or more, in an office environment.
