ABOUT THE ROLE
Our Client is seeking a detail-oriented Business Office Accountant to support the financial operations of the school and report directly to the Controller. This role oversees core business office functions including records maintenance, accounts, compliance and controls, receivables, benefits administration support, and other day-to-day business operations. The position is ideal for an accounting professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment, values accuracy, and can manage multiple priorities with professionalism and discretion.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensure the accuracy and propriety of all financial data and reports
- Provide accurate and timely invoicing, cash collection, reporting, and forecasting
- Manage treasury functions including cash management and general ledger activity
- Assist the Controller with month-end close procedures including preparation and review of account reconciliations
- Assist the Controller with budget and projection preparation by preparing revenue projections, variance analysis for certain accounts, generating reports, and preparing budget packages
- Assist the Controller in maintaining compliant business practices in accordance with the Faculty and Staff Handbook and applicable accounting and finance rules and regulations
- Prepare cash deposits for Student Accounts and Development Donations
- File Cash Receipts Journals for bank receipts in Deposit Binders
- Assist the Controller in researching and processing parent claims of invoice payment
- Assist the Controller in researching and processing chargebacks, returns, and bad checks
- Support Financial Aid Committee duties and deliverables
- Prepare and run accounting reports and maintain applicable files
- Participate in the annual audit process including documentation retrieval, reconciliations, and explanations
- Reconcile petty cash, bank accounts, payroll, and employee benefits accounts
- Assist with board committee meeting coordination and preparation
- Support business office special projects and other duties as needed
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution, preferably in Accounting, Business Administration, or a similar field
- 3 to 5 years of accounting experience
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and database applications
- Demonstrated competency with word processing, spreadsheet, and database software
- Demonstrated competency with bank reconciliation
- Strong attention to detail with consistent accuracy and thoroughness
- Professional demeanor
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and sensitive faculty, staff, and student information
- Ability to organize and prioritize a variety of projects and multiple tasks effectively and in a timely manner
- Ability to organize work independently, set priorities, and meet critical deadlines
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently and solve problems proactively
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Comfort with learning and working with new technologies
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of payroll processing
- Accounting experience in the education industry or a similar nonprofit environment
