Special Care Nursery / NRP Expectations
Travelers must be comfortable with initial stabilization of a newborn until the transport team arrives.
Because this facility is not a designated NICU, newborns requiring a higher level of neonatal care are typically transported to Albany Medical Center. NICU-level babies generally do not remain at the facility for longer than approximately 12 hours.
The traveler may be expected to assist with stabilization and care of the newborn while awaiting the specialized neonatal transport team.
Strong NRP skills and confidence with newborn stabilization are required.
Transport Requirements
Travelers may be required to assist with patient transports between units or facilities, including ambulance transports to other Bassett locations.
Important details:
- Travelers are expected to participate in transports for pregnant mothers, not newborns.
- Albany Medical Center has its own NICU transport team that comes directly to the facility for NICU newborn transfers.
- Travelers are expected to provide nursing care during transport within their scope of practice and according to unit policy.
- Transport expectations will be reviewed with candidates prior to the start of the assignment to ensure comfort with this responsibility.
Schedule
Shifts are scheduled as:
- 7:00 AM–7:00 PM
- 7:00 PM–7:00 AM
Scheduling operates on an 8-week scheduling cycle and includes:
- Every other weekend
- Holiday coverage
- 36 or 48 hours per week
The team will make every effort to accommodate a traveler's preferred shift and may offer block scheduling when possible, based on unit staffing needs. However, block scheduling is not guaranteed.
Clinicians are not routinely expected to switch between day and night shifts without a consistent scheduling pattern. If staffing needs change, travelers may be asked whether they are willing to temporarily adjust their shift.
Holiday Requirement
Travelers are expected to work every other holiday, consistent with full-time staff expectations.
Holiday requests may be submitted but are subject to unit staffing needs and approval.
