What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Mechanical Design Engineer position at Piper Maddox?
*** MUST HAVE: HANDS-ON MECHANICAL DESIGN EXPERIENCE WITH PDUs, RPPs, OR STS ***
The Opportunity
Our client is one of the fastest-growing power distribution manufacturers in the country — scaling from $60M to $200M in revenue this year, with $300–400M projected next. They are sold out through next year and actively turning down $20M projects because they don't yet have the team to execute. You could be one of the people who changes that.
The Company
Born out of a $250M exit in precision sheet metal manufacturing, this privately held, debt-free startup has grown into a vertically integrated power distribution manufacturer rapidly grabbing market share in the data center power sector. Their 115,000 sq ft Marietta facility assembles PDUs, RPPs, and STS units - with sister facilities handling sheet metal fabrication, in-house transformer manufacturing, and on-site testing. A 250,000 sq ft facility in West Virginia was just acquired to support continued expansion. The COO who recently joined previously took a major power manufacturer from a 16-week lead time to 3–5 days. The team is being built to match that high standard. The engineering team is growing fast alongside the business. The person coming into this seat will help create the technical culture: the design standards, the review process, the bar for what good looks like - all yours to set.
The Role
This is the technical authority seat in the mechanical engineering function. This is the person the team looks to when the design question is hard, the customer requirement is ambiguous, or the schedule is tight and a decision needs to be made.
You'll own the full mechanical design lifecycle for custom power solutions: from customer requirements through detailed design and manufacturing release. You'll set the design standards, lead UL listing activities, drive DFM discipline into every pass, and engage directly with customers, sales, and leadership when the technical stakes are high.
This role requires someone who is comfortable in those conversations - not someone who prefers to stay behind the CAD screen.
What You'll Own
- Full mechanical design lifecycle: concept through manufacturing release for PDUs, RPPs, and STS units
- UL listing activities - documentation, coordination with UL reps, objection resolution
- Thermal analysis and enclosure cooling design for data center environments
- Bus bar sizing, tolerance stack-up, GD&T-annotated production drawings
- DFM/DFA - designs that are manufacturable, not just correct on paper
- Technical leadership of the existing mechanical engineering team
- Customer-facing technical engagement: design reviews, FATs, requirements capture
What We're Looking For
Must-Have:
- 8 years of hands-on mechanical design experience with power distribution equipment, ideally for data center applications
- Demonstrated design experience in at least 1, and exposure to at least 3 of 4 product families: PDUs, RPPs, STS units, LV switchgear
- Comfort defending your design decisions to customers, sales, and executive leadership
Nice-to-Have:
- Expert-level SolidWorks proficiency (Inventor / Creo OK)
- Working knowledge of UL 891, UL 1558, UL 508A, NEMA, ANSI C37, and NEC/NFPA 70E
- Ability to lead UL listing activities
- PE license
- Seismic qualification experience (IEEE 693 or GR-63-CORE)
- FEA proficiency (ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation, or equivalent)
Why Now
The people joining this company in the next 12 months are getting in at an early stage of what will be a billion-dollar business within this decade.
If you've spent your career designing power distribution equipment at a Tier 1 OEM, and tired of feeling like a small fish in a big pond, and want to be the person an engineering team is built around - apply today.
