Position Summary
Northern Ohio Recovery Association (NORA), a nonprofit organization committed to promoting long-term recovery and wellness through peer-based support and evidence-based treatment services, is seeking a compassionate and dependable Peer Support Specialist. This role provides recovery-focused support services to individuals engaged in NORA’s treatment and recovery programs. Drawing upon personal lived experience and professional training, the Peer Support Specialist assists clients in achieving and maintaining long-term recovery, building life skills, navigating services, and developing healthier coping strategies. The Peer Support Specialist serves as a role model, advocate, mentor, and resource for individuals in all stages of recovery.
Key Responsibilities
● Provide one-on-one and group peer support services rooted in recovery principles and personal lived experience.
● Assist clients in identifying strengths, making recovery plans, and setting achievable goals.
● Help clients navigate treatment services, community resources, and recovery supports.
● Model positive recovery behaviors and support clients in developing healthy coping skills.
● Support clients in accessing social services, housing, employment resources, and transportation as needed.
● Document all services accurately and timely in the electronic health record (EHR).
● Maintain appropriate boundaries and uphold ethical standards for peer support.
● Collaborate with clinical, prevention, and recovery support teams to coordinate care.
● Participate in case reviews, team meetings, and individualized service planning when appropriate.
● Lead or co-facilitate recovery activities, groups, workshops, and community engagement events.
● Advocate for client needs and empower individuals to speak for themselves whenever possible.
● Uphold confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA and organizational policies.
● Engage in ongoing training and supervision to maintain certification and enhance skills.
● Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission of NORA.
● Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
● Demonstrated lived experience with substance use recovery or mental health recovery and a minimum of two (2) years of sustained recovery.
● Strong communication, interpersonal, and active listening skills.
● Ability to establish trust and rapport with diverse individuals and communities.
● Basic computer proficiency and willingness to learn electronic documentation systems.
● Ability to maintain professionalism, boundaries, and confidentiality.
● Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
● Must possess a valid Ohio driver’s license and meet agency insurance requirements (if transporting clients).
● Ohio Certified Peer Recovery Supporter (CPRS)
● Completion of required OhioMHAS peer support training and supervision standards.
● Certification in CPR/First Aid (or willingness to complete upon hire).
● Relevant work experience may be considered in place of academic requirements.
Preferred Skills
● Experience working in behavioral health, recovery housing, or community-based recovery programs.
● Familiarity with local recovery communities, support groups, and community resources.
● Knowledge of motivational interviewing or strength-based approaches.
● Ability to de-escalate and support individuals in crisis.
