MISSION/ROLE PURPOSE

The Deaf Coach works with assigned families with deaf or hard of hearing children. The goal of the Deaf Coach program is to increase family communication at home, support the deaf child’s language development, and serve as an additional resource for the family. Serving Sacramento and surrounding counties.

Essential Functions

Serve as Deaf Coach for each assigned family which includes the following:

  • Meet with the family for 1 to 1.5 hours each week at their home or school site Teach sign vocabulary and engage the family in sign language communication.
  • Model the use of sign language and visual cues when interacting with their child Provide strategies for communication.
  • Share about Deaf Culture and the general experiences of Deaf people Introduce families to events in the Deaf Community.
  • Support family’s choice of communication.
  • Serve as a positive role model for both the child and the family.
  • Schedule weekly visits with families and communicate as needed to cancel and re-schedule visits.
  • Prepare appropriate activities for each session with the family; Utilize Ski-Hi curriculum and other resources and materials deemed appropriate as provided.
  • Communicate and collaborate with DHH Teacher/Service Provider with respect to serving the family.
  • Communicate regularly with the supervisor about schedule and schedule changes Complete and submit report after each family visit.
  • Attend trainings and quarterly meetings for Deaf Coaches.
  • Submit timesheets and mileage reimbursements on 15th day and last day of each month Perform any other duties as assigned

About You

Education and Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years of college and/or equivalent experience working with deaf and hard of hearing individuals; Demonstrated experience providing ASL instructions and working with children and youth.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language and ability to teach American Sign Language. Good communication skills as needed to communicate and interact with parents and other family members.
  • Self-starter qualities are needed to prepare for each family visit and develop age-appropriate activities with children and adults.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to develop rapport and engage with families to develop trust.
  • Valid California driver’s license and current automobile insurance as required by law or reliable means of transportation to arrive to assignment sites.
  • Ability to travel in Greater Sacramento area including Placer, El Dorado and Yolo counties.
  • Scheduling flexibility to work evenings and some weekends.

$20 per hour/2 hours per assignment.
