Mission/Role Purpose
- Provide communication assistance to Deaf and hard of hearing individuals in the community by way of both pre-scheduled assignments and 24/7 emergency services.
- Interpret assignments as delegated by the Dispatcher and/or Communications Department Manager. Assignments include but are not limited to medical appointments, various company staff meetings, formal speeches, press conferences, corporate settings, and government entities as well as in-house interpreting and document translation
- Provide communication assistance through Video Remote Interpreting.
- Record statistics on a monthly basis related to the provision of service.
- In-House office tasks such as answering phones and providing information and referrals to the general public as needed.
- Other duties as assigned by the Communications Department Manager and/or the CEO.
Education, Qualifications, And Certifications
- Strong expressive and receptive skills
- National Sign Language Interpreter certification (NAD IV/V, BEI-Advanced or Master, or RID)
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Excellent customer service skills
- Strong understanding of ASL and Deaf culture
- Ability to work within a changing schedule
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Demonstrated ability to assess and adapt interpreting styles to fit the communication needs of the individual who may be Deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind, or recently deafened.
- Must have a valid CA driver License, automobile insurance as required by law and reliable means of transportation.
- Willingness to drive the long distances to assignments in your office service area as well as assignments within NorCal’s service region including 24 northeastern counties.
- Minimum of five years in sign language interpreting experience; compensation includes an attractive base salary commensurate with experience.
