What are the responsibilities and job description for the Software Designer position at MJH Consulting?
Software Designer (Contract) - MJH Consulting
Company Description
MJH Consulting helps product teams build with clarity by providing strategic advisory services grounded in nearly a decade of enterprise product experience. The firm partners with organizations to define product vision, align stakeholders, and translate complex requirements into actionable roadmaps. MJH Consulting focuses on data-informed decision-making and practical frameworks that support scalable, resilient products. Team members collaborate closely with clients across industries, working in dynamic environments where innovation and measurable outcomes are valued.
Role Description
This remote fractional contract role designs the software MJH builds with clients: the interfaces, flows, and interaction patterns of client prototypes and internal tools. Day-to-day responsibilities include planning and conducting lightweight user research (stakeholder and user interviews, usability walkthroughs, findings synthesis), designing UX flows and UI for web applications and proofs of concept, maintaining lightweight design systems that engineers can build from directly, prototyping in Figma and iterating against real user and stakeholder feedback, and shaping the interaction patterns of AI-driven product experiences such as conversational interfaces and agent-assisted workflows. The Software Designer works hand in hand with MJH engineers, producing specs and components that translate cleanly to Next.js and React implementation.
Utilization is intentionally light and per-engagement, typically 5-10 hours per week when activated but can vary.
Qualifications
• 5-7 years of relevant experience in software, product, or UX/UI design is necessary, including hands-on user experience research and design.
• Candidates should demonstrate user research competence: planning interviews and usability sessions, synthesizing findings, and translating research into design decisions that hold up in front of stakeholders.
• Candidates should demonstrate a strong portfolio of shipped software: web application UX/UI, design systems, and complex workflow design.
• Candidates should be fluent in Figma, including components, variables, and prototyping, and comfortable handing off to engineers who build in React.
• Candidates should understand front-end constraints well enough to design what ships, and experience designing AI product interactions (chat, copilots, agent workflows) is highly beneficial.
• Candidates should have experience designing for enterprise users where clarity and restraint outperform decoration.
• Candidates should work independently, take direction efficiently, and turn work around reliably in a remote environment.
• Experience in consulting, agency, or B2B SaaS contexts is highly beneficial.
• A design-related degree, or equivalent practical experience. A master's degree is preferred but is not a heavy requirement.
How This Engagement Works (Please Read Before Applying)
MJH Consulting is an early-stage boutique firm, and this is a 1099 contract role on the firm's delivery bench. Team members are onboarded now and engaged as client work closes; there is no salary or retainer component. Compensation is a meaningful share of each engagement's revenue, split across the team that delivers it, with an additional bonus on any client a team member brings in directly. Exact terms are documented in the subcontractor agreement and are reviewed together on the first call. This structure fits experienced independents who want senior client work with genuine upside alongside their own practice; it is not a fit for candidates who need guaranteed monthly income at this time.
Hiring Process
An introductory call with the founder, followed by a case conversation, then agreement, NDA, and security onboarding through the MJH portal. Onboarding to the bench is completed before the first client engagement.
