What are the responsibilities and job description for the AI/ML Software Engineer position at MJH Consulting?
AI/ML Engineer (Contract) - MJH Consulting
Company Description
MJH Consulting helps product teams build with clarity by providing strategic advisory services grounded in nearly a decade of enterprise product experience. The firm partners with organizations to define product vision, align stakeholders, and translate complex requirements into actionable roadmaps. MJH Consulting focuses on data-informed decision-making and practical frameworks that support scalable, resilient products. Team members collaborate closely with clients across industries, working in dynamic environments where innovation and measurable outcomes are valued.
Role Description
This remote AI/ML Software Engineer contract role focuses on designing, implementing, and optimizing machine learning and large language model systems to support client product initiatives. Day-to-day responsibilities include researching suitable approaches, building and evaluating models and LLM-based applications, assessing performance with rigorous statistical and evaluation methods, and refining systems for better accuracy, efficiency, and cost. The AI/ML Software Engineer will collaborate with product and engineering teams to translate business problems into technical solutions, integrate models into production environments, and document architectures, experiments, and results. The role also involves monitoring deployed systems, performing ongoing improvements, and contributing to best practices for responsible, reliable AI.
Much of MJH's current client work centers on applied LLM systems: retrieval-augmented generation, agentic workflows with tool integration, and evaluation harnesses that hold proofs of concept to an honest standard. Engineers typically deliver working proofs of concept inside 8-12 week transformation programs and provide on-call technical counsel within monthly executive retainers, with activated utilization of roughly 10-20 hours per week per engagement. The engineer presents technical findings directly to senior client stakeholders alongside MJH consultants.
Qualifications
• 5-7 years of relevant work experience in machine learning, AI engineering, or software engineering with substantial ML responsibility is necessary.
• Candidates should have hands-on experience delivering LLM-based systems beyond notebooks, including retrieval-augmented generation, tool use and agent patterns, evaluation design, and cost and latency tradeoffs.
• Candidates should possess strong Computer Science and Algorithms skills for building robust, scalable AI/ML solutions.
• Candidates should possess Pattern Recognition and Neural Networks skills for designing and training effective models.
• Candidates should possess Statistics skills for rigorous model evaluation, experimentation, and data analysis.
• Candidates should have experience with common ML frameworks and tools (e.g., Python, PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn) and version control systems.
• Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in data preprocessing, feature engineering, and working with structured and unstructured datasets.
• Candidates should have strong problem-solving skills, clear written and verbal communication, and the ability to work independently in a remote environment.
• Candidates should be comfortable explaining technical tradeoffs to executive audiences and supporting consultants in client-facing settings.
• Candidates should ideally have prior experience delivering AI/ML solutions in a product or consulting context and a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. A master's or advanced degree is preferred but is not a heavy requirement.
How This Engagement Works (Please Read Before Applying)
MJH Consulting is an early-stage boutique firm, and this is a 1099 contract role on the firm's delivery bench. Engineers are onboarded now and engaged as client work closes; there is no salary or retainer component. Compensation is a meaningful share of each engagement's revenue, split across the team that delivers it, with an additional bonus on any client an engineer brings in directly. Exact terms are documented in the subcontractor agreement and are reviewed together on the first call. This structure fits experienced independents who want senior client work with genuine upside alongside their own practice; it is not a fit for candidates who need guaranteed monthly income at this time.
Hiring Process
An introductory call with the founder, followed by a technical case conversation, then agreement, NDA, and security onboarding through the MJH portal. Onboarding to the bench is completed before the first client engagement.
