What are the responsibilities and job description for the Data Engineer Specialist position at MJH Consulting?
Data Engineer Specialist (Contract) - MJH Consulting
Company Description
MJH Consulting helps product teams build with clarity by providing strategic advisory services grounded in nearly a decade of enterprise product experience. The firm partners with organizations to define product vision, align stakeholders, and translate complex requirements into actionable roadmaps. MJH Consulting focuses on data-informed decision-making and practical frameworks that support scalable, resilient products. Team members collaborate closely with clients across industries, working in dynamic environments where innovation and measurable outcomes are valued.
Role Description
The Data Engineer Specialist is MJH's all-in-one data role, spanning the full data lifecycle in a client context: engineering the pipelines, modeling and analyzing the data, and communicating what it means. The title is deliberate: one specialist who carries data engineering, analysis, and applied data science as a single craft. Day-to-day responsibilities include building and maintaining data pipelines and transformations, defining metrics and building executive-ready dashboards, performing statistical analysis and experimentation, and preparing datasets that make client AI initiatives possible. The role will collaborate with MJH consultants and client teams to establish the measurement layer of transformation programs: the baselines, metrics, and reporting that make outcomes visible and defensible.
Because MJH is a boutique, the specialist shape is the point. On one engagement the work may be pipeline and warehouse engineering; on another, metric definition and dashboarding; on another, statistical evaluation of a proof of concept. Comfort moving across those modes, and knowing which one a problem actually needs, is the core of the job. Typical activated utilization is roughly 10-20 hours per week per engagement.
Qualifications
• 5-7 years of relevant work experience across data engineering, data analysis, or data science is necessary, with working competence in at least two of the three.
• Candidates should possess expert-level SQL, including window functions and complex transformations, and strong Python for data work.
• Candidates should have experience with modern data stack tools such as dbt, cloud data warehouses (e.g., BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift), and pipeline orchestration.
• Candidates should demonstrate strong statistics fundamentals for experimentation, evaluation, and honest interpretation of results.
• Candidates should be able to define metrics rigorously and build clear, executive-ready dashboards and reporting.
• Candidates should demonstrate data storytelling: presenting findings to senior stakeholders in plain language with sound reasoning.
• Candidates should have experience preparing and evaluating data for machine learning or AI applications; experience supporting LLM initiatives is highly beneficial.
• Candidates should have strong problem-solving skills, clear written and verbal communication, and the ability to work independently in a remote environment.
• Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field such as Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience. A master's degree is preferred but is not a heavy requirement.
How This Engagement Works (Please Read Before Applying)
MJH Consulting is an early-stage boutique firm, and this is a 1099 contract role on the firm's delivery bench. Team members are onboarded now and engaged as client work closes; there is no salary or retainer component. Compensation is a meaningful share of each engagement's revenue, split across the team that delivers it, with an additional bonus on any client a team member brings in directly. Exact terms are documented in the subcontractor agreement and are reviewed together on the first call. This structure fits experienced independents who want senior client work with genuine upside alongside their own practice; it is not a fit for candidates who need guaranteed monthly income at this time.
Hiring Process
An introductory call with the founder, followed by a technical case conversation, then agreement, NDA, and security onboarding through the MJH portal. Onboarding to the bench is completed before the first client engagement.
