About the Role

The oldest and largest independent, employee-owned publishing house in the United States is hiring a College Publishing Sales Representative to cover the Memphis territory, spanning the Memphis, TN and Oxford, MS area. The company's college division produces textbooks and digital courseware for undergraduate studies across the humanities, sciences, and social sciences, with a focus on equity-minded teaching, flexible learning pathways, and accessibility.

This is a field sales role. The representative will visit college campuses roughly four days per week during the academic year, meeting with 10-15 professors per campus day to consult on teaching challenges and demonstrate how the publisher's materials can support their course goals. The remaining time is spent on virtual faculty meetings, strategic planning, and conference attendance. Overnight travel is approximately 35%. The company provides a vehicle, laptop, and reimbursement for travel expenses.

What the Role Covers

  • Conducting roughly four campus visits per week during the academic year, consulting with 10-15 faculty per campus day
  • Conducting virtual meetings with faculty on non-campus days
  • Developing relationships with professors by assessing teaching challenges and presenting courseware and textbook solutions
  • Engaging instructors through cold calls and scheduled appointments
  • Learning major new titles and revised editions each year, along with competing texts
  • Increasing revenue and adoption rates within the defined sales territory
  • Collaborating with colleagues on strategic plans for priority sales opportunities
  • Setting tracking and revenue goals with guidance from sales management
  • Documenting activities and tracking progress using the company's Salesforce-based CRM
  • Providing customer support to instructors assigning or evaluating course materials
  • Attending national and regional conferences

Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree
  • Valid driver's license
  • Authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Ability to travel by car and airplane, with approximately 35% overnight travel
  • Residence within or near the Memphis/Oxford territory (relocation can be negotiated)
  • Strong communication and critical thinking skills
  • Some successful experience or internship history in sales, marketing, editing, teaching, or customer-facing roles is ideal
