What are the responsibilities and job description for the High School Counselor position at MCCLUER HIGH?
High School Guidance Counselor: Architect of Aspirations
Location: McCluer High School (9-12)
Year: 2026-2027 School Year
The Opportunity: Guiding the Journey to "What's Next"
In Ferguson-Florissant, our counselors are the heart of the student experience. We are looking for a compassionate, driven, and highly organized Guidance Counselor who understands that high school is a pivotal season of discovery. You aren't just a "scheduler"—you are a mentor, a listener, and a strategist. You are the professional who helps students bridge the gap between where they are and who they want to become.
As part of the FFSD "New Chapter," you will lead a comprehensive school counseling program that prioritizes equity, mental health, and post-secondary success. If you are ready to be the anchor for our scholars as they navigate their paths, your next chapter starts here.
Role Summary
As a High School Guidance Counselor, you will provide a proactive, developmental program to address the academic, career, and social-emotional needs of all students. Working in a student-centered environment, you will deliver individual and group counseling, lead classroom guidance lessons, and facilitate the college/career planning process. You will work collaboratively with families, staff, and the community to remove barriers to learning and ensure every student has a clear "flight plan" for life after graduation.
Why You’ll Succeed (Qualifications)
- Certified Professional: Valid Missouri Certification in School Counseling (7-12 or K-12).
- Degree Requirements: Master’s Degree in School Counseling or a related field, required.
- The "Navigator" Mindset: You stay current on college admissions trends, FAFSA requirements, trade school pathways, and the local labor market.
- Equity Champion: You are a fierce advocate for all students, ensuring that every scholar—regardless of background—has access to rigorous coursework and high-impact post-secondary opportunities.
- Relational Expert: You are a skilled communicator who can de-escalate crises, build trust with teenagers, and partner effectively with parents and guardians.
Your Impact (Key Duties)
- Individualized Planning: Guide students through the creation and maintenance of their Individual Career and Academic Plans (ICAPs), ensuring they are on track for graduation and beyond.
- Social-Emotional Advocacy: Provide short-term individual counseling and responsive services to support students’ mental health and well-being.
- College & Career Leadership: Coordinate college fairs, scholarship applications, and career exploration events to expand students' horizons.
- Collaborative Support: Serve as a key member of the Care Team and MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) to identify and support students who need extra intervention.
- Data-Driven Practice: Monitor student progress, attendance, and credit acquisition to provide timely, targeted support that ensures no student falls through the cracks.
Your Leadership Partners
- Primary Support: Building Principal
- District Support: Director of Student Support Services, Coordinator of Support Services, and Lead Counselor
The Logistics of Your Success
- Classification: Exempt, Certified Staff (Shares the same employment terms as a Certified Teacher).
- Work Year: 10-Month Academic Calendar (Typically includes additional "Counselor Days" per district contract).
- Salary: Based on the Teacher Salary Schedule, determined by experience and Master’s level education.
- Benefits: Full-time Eligibility (Medical, Dental, Vision, & PSRS/PEERS Retirement).
