Substation Training Instructor (Journeyman Electrician)

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Substation Training Instructor to deliver established curriculum focused on substation construction and maintenance. This role is primarily instructional delivery, not course creation—ideal for a seasoned substation professional who enjoys teaching and mentoring others.

The instructor will lead structured training sessions (“schools”) and support hands-on learning through occasional substation site visits. This is a great opportunity for a retired or semi-retired journeyman looking to stay engaged and share their expertise.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver pre-developed substation training curriculum to internal and/or external audiences

• Facilitate 3-week instructor-led training sessions covering multiple technical topics

• Conduct engaging classroom instruction using PowerPoint and other multimedia tools

• Support hands-on learning through substation field visits (3–4 times per year)

• Ensure high-quality instruction and learner comprehension

• Assist with training program coordination and administrative tasks

• Evaluate training effectiveness and provide feedback/reporting on outcomes

• Collaborate with training staff to ensure consistent delivery standards

Confirmed 2026 Training Schedule

All training sessions run Monday–Thursday (10-hour days):

• May 4 – May 21 → 3rd Year Apprentice School

• June 1 – June 18 → 4th Year Apprentice School

• September 14 – October 1 → 1st Year Apprentice School

• October 12 – October 29 → 2nd Year Apprentice School

➡️ Preparation Time:

• Approximately 1 week of prep time required prior to each 3-week session

➡️ Total Instruction Time:

• ~12 weeks annually prep time

Required Qualifications

• Journeyman Substation Electrician certification (required)

• Minimum 5 years of substation experience (including apprenticeship/training)

• Strong knowledge of:

  • Substation equipment and systems

  • Breakers and relays

  • Mechanical and electrical components within substations

• Prior experience in substation construction or maintenance

• Proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint and basic MS Office tools

• Strong communication and presentation skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience in training, teaching, or mentoring

• Experience delivering technical training programs

• Familiarity with curriculum development or instructional design

• Utility or energy industry experience
