Interim Controller (Nonprofit Organization)
A mission-driven nonprofit organization is seeking an experienced Interim Controller to provide hands-on leadership and oversight of the accounting and finance function during a transitional period. This role will be responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining compliance with nonprofit regulations, and supporting leadership with financial insights.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll
- Manage and execute the month-end and year-end close process in a timely and accurate manner
- Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with GAAP, with a focus on nonprofit reporting standards
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, including IRS Form 990 and grant reporting
- Monitor cash flow, budgeting, and forecasting to support organizational decision-making
- Lead audit preparation and serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors
- Maintain and improve internal controls, policies, and procedures
- Partner with executive leadership and program teams to provide financial guidance and reporting
- Support board reporting and finance committee presentations as needed
- Assist with process improvements and system optimization during the interim period
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA strongly preferred)
- 7 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a Controller or similar leadership role
- Prior experience within a nonprofit organization required
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards (fund accounting, grant tracking, etc.)
- Experience with audit preparation and financial statement reporting
- Proficiency in accounting systems and advanced Excel skills
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact across all levels of the organization
