We are working with our Vancouver, WA non-profit client to recruit an Interim Marketing and Communications Director to join their team on a contract basis for 3-6 months. This is an onsite position and requires relevant experience in the non-profit, arts or similar sectors. In this role, you will manage a small team of direct reports to guide integrated marketing, communications and creative strategy. This is a blend of tactical and strategic work, as you will be a key stakeholder in writing, editing, public relations work and executive communications work. You will serve as a strategic advisor to senior leadership and the organization’s Executive Director, advising on messaging, thought leadership, crisis communications (as necessary) and similar. You will also be a critical partner in connecting the MarCom function to the larger organization, working closely with other senior leaders, executives and the board. Almost above all, you will be a resource for keeping integrated marketing and communications projects aligned with timelines, schedules, budgets and similar, and will be managing and mentoring a team of direct reports. To be a fit, you should bring a minimum of 5 years leading communications and/or marketing teams in a relevant industry, with experience in non-profit highly preferred. You will need to bring a high level of writing and editing skill, experience driving thought leadership and executive communications programs, and strong project management skills.


This is an interim, contract role with the goal of easing departmental transition! While initial timeline will start at 3 months, there is absolutely opportunity to extend or convert to a permanent employee with this organization. Hourly compensation ranges from $50 to $60 an hour, with potential slight flexibility for complete alignment with the profile described here. You will be a fully onsite employee in their Vancouver, WA office, and will be a W2 contractor with LHH during the contract, which includes access to medical, dental, vision and 401(K) benefits, and accruing sick time at the WA state rate. You will:

  • Serve as both a strategic and tactical leader of the marketing and communications function, overseeing a small team of direct reports in performance management, work output and collaboration across the organization
  • Partner closely with senior leadership, executives and the board to drive media placement, executive communications planning and preparation, public relations strategy and thought leadership programs for the organization
  • Write, edit and optimize a variety of communications, marketing and editorial content for the organization with the goal of landing placement, driving brand storytelling and maximizing opportunities
  • Drive department projects forward, aligning processes and output with organizational goals to maintain tight timelines and schedules, budgets, resourcing and similar
  • Represent the organization as the key media contact, securing placement, developing media relationships and overseeing communications strategy for organizational communications, news and crisis needs


Your experience should include:

  • 5 years of leadership experience overseeing small teams of direct reports and department P&Ls in a communications and/or marketing function
  • Experience in communications leadership roles in non-profit, arts, public interest, cultural or similar spaces, required
  • Track record of tactical work in executive communications and thought leadership, public relations, media relations, crisis communications and writing and editing
  • Bachelor’s degree, required; Advanced education, preferred
  • Excellent project management skills with the ability to set schedules and timelines, resource projects, keep teams and deliverables on track, and partner closely with cross-functional teams
  • Proficiency in project management tools (Asana, etc.), Sharepoint, strongly preferred
