Why this job – CONTROLLER:
A well-established, midsized construction company in the Napa area is looking for a Controller to join their leadership team. This organization has served Northern California for over 30 years and is known for its strong reputation, steady growth, and high-quality construction services.
In this role, you’ll oversee all accounting operations, including job costing for active projects, managing AP/AR through a long-tenured and reliable two-person team, and leading payroll for roughly 50 union employees. Beyond the day-to-day, the company is excited for someone who can elevate their financial reporting, support more strategic decision-making for ownership, and build out a stronger budgeting and forecasting process across projects.
This position is also a planned succession path for the current CFO, giving you clear long-term growth and a direct seat at the table with the owners. The company offers a flexible schedule (typically 6–3 or 8–5), and while the role is fully onsite at first, they’re open to hybrid flexibility once training is complete.
What You'll Actually Do:
- Lead monthly close, prepare full financial statements, and manage all job-cost accounting functions (WIP, overhead allocation, over/under billing, job profitability).
- Oversee daily accounting operations including AP, AR, billing, cash management, bank relationships, and the company line of credit.
- Supervise and support a two-person accounting/administrative team
- Ensure accurate payroll for multiple union locals and smooth back-office operations.
- Manage year-end close and coordinate with the outside CPA firm, including financial statement preparation, tax packages, audits, and insurance/union compliance.
- Produce data-driven financial reporting for ownership, enhance reporting capabilities, and build forecasting, budgeting, and cash flow analysis processes.
- Maintain financial controls, ensure accurate use of Spectrum software, and drive process improvements across accounting and project cost systems.
- Complete financial portions of customer prequalification packages
- Responsible for Human Resources related duties such as payroll, benefits administration, paperwork and employee relations.
To Be Successful in This Role, You Will Need:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 5 years of hands-on, progressive accounting experience
- Solid understanding of job costing and project-based accounting
- Strong financial reporting skills with the ability to turn data into insights
- Experience with budgeting and forecasting (or excitement to build it out)
- Construction industry background is a plus, but not required
- Familiarity with union payroll and basic HR administration is helpful, but not mandatory
Where and How Much:
- Target Compensation $125K -$150K Discretionary Bonus
- In-Office with flexibility in the future, Napa, CA
- 100% Employer paid benefits | PTO | 401K
Salary : $125,000 - $150,000
