Job Summary:
A Cognos Lead Consultant (typically 5 10 years of experience) is responsible for the stability, performance, and day-to-day operation of the IBM Cognos BI environment. This role focuses on L3 support, complex troubleshooting, and ensuring that business-critical reports and dashboards remain available and accurate.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the IBM Cognos Analytics platform (Reports, Dashboards, Framework Manager, Scheduling)
- Act as the L3 / technical escalation point for complex Cognos issues
- Drive platform stability, performance, and continuous improvement
- Lead Cognos upgrades, patches, and configuration changes
- Design and develop Cognos reports, dashboards, and scorecards
- Build and maintain Framework Manager models (packages, joins, security)
- Optimize SQL queries and report execution for large datasets
- Support report enhancements and new BI requirements
- Diagnose and resolve performance issues, job failures, and data discrepancies
- Manage report scheduling, bursting, and job monitoring
- Perform root cause analysis (RCA) and implement preventive measures
- Support businesscritical reporting windows and audits
- Deliver minor enhancements and configuration changes
- Integrate Cognos with enterprise data sources (data warehouses, relational databases)
- Work closely with business users, data teams, and infrastructure teams
- Participate in CAB, design reviews, and release planning
- Translate business reporting needs into technical BI solutions
Technical Skills Required
- Cognos Tools: Advanced expertise in Report Studio, Framework Manager (modeling), and Cognos Administration (v11/v12).
- Database/SQL: Strong ability to write and optimize complex SQL queries and understand data warehousing (Star/Snowflake schemas).
- ETL Knowledge: Familiarity with data integration processes (e.g., , DataStage) to troubleshoot data loading issues.
- Troubleshooting Soft Skills: Experience with ticketing systems like ServiceNow and knowledge of ITIL processes.
- Optional Automation: Proficiency in JavaScript or Python for automating repetitive support tasks or enhancing report functionality.
Qualifications
- Experience: Usually 8 10 years in BI support or development.
- Availability: Often requires flexibility for on-call rotations or shift work to support global business hours.
