Job Summary

The Elementary Social Studies Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing professional learning experiences and resources for Granite School District teachers in curriculum, instructional strategies, differentiation, and assessment for social studies content in multiple modalities. The position focuses on promoting the implementation of the Utah Core Standards for social studies with research-based practices using district-adopted tools. The Specialist will provide sustained support to Granite District teachers through a continuum of content coaching and professional learning opportunities.

Essential Functions

  • Professional Learning & Coaching
    • Provide professional learning experiences in curriculum, instructional strategies, differentiation, and assessment for social studies content in multiple modalities based on K-5 core standards.
    • Support teachers and school leaders through requested content coaching.
    • Maintain professional competence and growth through ongoing training and learning provided by the school district, state, and other self-selected professional learning activities.
  • Curriculum Development & Integration
    • Collaborate with content area specialists with the integration of curriculum, skills, and practice standards.
    • Develop social studies curriculum materials which model content integration.
    • Demonstrate/model effective social studies teaching strategies especially as it relates to content integration.
    • Identify and maintain an inventory of resources which support quality social studies instruction.
    • Embed cross-curricular connections within elementary social studies curriculum maps to support literacy standards.
  • District & Community Collaboration
    • Partner with other district departments, USBE, and other external organizations to support shared goals and initiatives.
    • Participate in committees and task forces.

Required Knowledge And Skills

  • Communication & Collaboration: Strong oral and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal relationship skills; ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of people and create a team-based environment.
  • Technology & AI Literacy: Skill in utilizing technology for basic tasks as well as integrating technology, including AI literacy skills, to support social studies teaching, learning, and instructional decision-making.
  • Instructional Design: Knowledge of adult learning theory and strategies; skill in implementing proficiency-based learning.
  • Self-Management: Ability to work independently with little direct supervision as well as part of a team; accountable, responsible, self-motivated; displays effective multi-tasking and time management skills.
  • Classroom & Workshop Management: Establishes and maintains a positive learning environment and handles management issues in a calm manner.

Required Education, Training, And Qualifications

  • Requires one of the following:
    • A current Professional Educator License issued by the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) in a relevant license area (Professional Elementary Educator License).
    • A current equivalent professional educator license from another state or country; individuals hired under this provision must obtain a Utah Professional Educator License by the end of their first school year of employment with the District.
  • A master's degree in education or a related field is preferred.
  • An Instructional Coach or Educational Technology endorsement is preferred.
Required Prior Experience

  • Requires a minimum of five (5) years of successful K-12 classroom teaching experience.

Assigned Decision Making

  • Curriculum Alignment: Authorized to review and recommend supplementary elementary social studies instructional resources aligned with the Utah Core Standards.
  • Professional Learning Design: Authorized to design the scope, sequence, and delivery modalities of district-wide elementary social studies professional learning experiences.

Non-Supervisory Interaction

  • Works with various department secretaries, specialists, and directors.
  • Works collaboratively with a diverse group of people.
  • Creates and supports a team-based environment within the department.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Not applicable. Provide functional mentoring and coaching to classroom teachers, but does not possess formal hiring or evaluation authority.

Budget Responsibility

  • Not applicable. Assists in managing the physical resource inventory but does not hold direct budgetary or fiscal management authority.

Working Environment

  • Work takes place in typical school and office environments.
  • Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.

Physical Requirements

  • Communication: Regularly required to speak and/or hear to communicate with teachers, administrators, and staff.
  • Mobility: Frequently required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, and crouch. Occasionally required to climb or balance.
  • Vision: Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • Lifting: Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
