Title: IT Manager, Mainframe Systems

Location: Queens, NY (Hybrid)
Salary: $165,000 – $194,265 (commensurate with experience)
Overview
We are seeking an experienced IT Manager, Mainframe Systems to lead and modernize mainframe programming and operations in support of organizational and business objectives. This role will oversee development and operations teams, evaluate current systems and processes, and implement improvements to enhance performance, reliability, and scalability.
The ideal candidate brings a strong mix of technical expertise, leadership, and strategic thinking, with the ability to drive modernization while ensuring continuity of critical systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead mainframe programming and operations teams, driving performance and accountability
- Oversee application development, testing, and production operations to ensure accuracy and reliability of core processes
- Design and implement system enhancements, automation, and modernization initiatives
- Identify and mitigate system risks, ensuring high availability and performance
- Establish and enforce system standards, documentation, and operational best practices
- Manage incident response processes, including escalation, root cause analysis, and resolution
- Define and track KPIs to support continuous improvement and service excellence
- Evaluate and implement tools to improve monitoring, automation, and system reliability
- Collaborate with cross-functional IT teams to develop integrated, cross-platform solutions
- Provide mentorship, training, and technical guidance to team members
Qualifications
- 10 years of progressive experience in application development, ideally within a mainframe environment (Linux/distributed systems experience considered)
- 3 years of leadership experience managing IT teams
- Strong experience improving technical processes, testing strategies, and system performance
- Knowledge of COBOL, CICS, RPG, and JCL preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365, particularly Excel
- Bachelor’s degree preferred (or equivalent experience)
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Excellent communication and project management abilities
- Self-starter with the ability to quickly learn new technologies
- Experience working in regulated environments (e.g., HIPAA) preferred
