Overview
An established commercial general contractor in the Austin area is looking to add an experienced Estimator to the preconstruction team. This role plays a key part in developing accurate, competitive bids across a variety of commercial projects, working closely with operations, project management, and subcontractors to ensure successful project delivery from concept through award.
The position offers strong long-term growth, a collaborative team environment, and a steady pipeline of commercial work across sectors such as office, retail, healthcare, education, and light industrial.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs and cost estimates for commercial construction projects
- Review drawings, specifications, and bid documents to develop accurate pricing
- Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier proposals
- Build and maintain relationships with subcontractors and vendors in the Austin market
- Identify value engineering opportunities and cost-saving strategies
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and scope reviews
- Assist in developing conceptual budgets and preliminary estimates
- Work closely with Project Managers and field teams during project handoff
- Maintain organized estimate documentation and historical cost data
- Support multiple bids simultaneously while meeting deadlines
Qualifications
- 3 years of estimating experience in commercial construction
- Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and project sequencing
- Experience estimating ground-up and/or interior build-out projects
- Proficiency with estimating software (e.g., Bluebeam, PlanSwift, On-Screen Takeoff, or similar)
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Effective communication and relationship-building skills
- Degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field preferred (not required)
Preferred Experience
- Experience working for a commercial general contractor
- Familiarity with the Austin subcontractor market
- Exposure to projects in the $1M–$20M range
- Experience with conceptual estimating and budgeting
- Knowledge of local building codes and permitting processes
