Position Overview
Manage the work to obtain new business opportunities for the company by evaluating and estimating construction costs, receiving competitive and responsible bids ready for contracting, providing conceptual/budget bids for negotiated and GMP projects.
Essential Job Functions:
- Review the scope of construction work to be completed so as to validate the type of work, basic materials, project duration and suggest responsibilities for construction.
- Use information available and background knowledge to assemble complete and competent bidder’s list, to coordinate pre-bid meetings, hold bid openings, bid review meetings, and to review job costs throughout the project for trends.
- Make phone calls to subcontractors/vendors soliciting bids as required and update digital bidding software with their intentions to bid.
- Generating estimating deliverables on assigned projects.
- Create, maintain, and improve Estimating cost database(s).
- Develop and coach Estimators and Assistant Estimators.
- Monitor the marketplace for project/relationship opportunities.
- Develop accurate conceptual cost models.
- Perform takeoffs (Quantity Survey) via digital takeoff software.
- Utilize Microsoft Office for word processing and spreadsheets.
- Understand how to identify missing components within design documents and account for those components in cost estimates.
- Contribute in a meaningful way to value engineering and systems alternative proposals.
- Reconcile estimates with consultants and design team members.
- Understand construction means and methods and how they affect costs due to schedule and productivity.
- Coordinate and evaluate feedback from departments within the company (Operations, Accounting etc.), the project Owner and the project Architect during the estimating and construction process.
- Work within the company team process when and where required based upon the scope, size and duration of the project.
- Maintain relationships with subcontractors and equipment/material vendors.
- Lead bid processes and supervise Estimators and Assistant Estimators’ performance on the bid.
- Assist the Business Development efforts of Elford, Inc. towards the procurement of new business.
- Use established estimating procedures/standards as guidelines in the performance of routine duties and participate in the development of new/revised procedures/standards as required.
- Responsible for the accuracy of take-off (Quantity Surveys) and pricing of own work and others assigned specifically to your projects.
- Personally complete and/or assign clerical, administrative or technical work necessary to ensure proper documentation of estimating process.
- Maintain work area(s) according to company housekeeping standards.
- Maintain professional appearance and discipline according to company standards.
EDUCATION/TRAINING
Bachelors Degree in Construction Management, Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent. Ten or more years of practical employment experience in the construction industry, with at least even years’ experience in an estimating role, or those dealing with the market niches for which Elford, Inc. participates or intends to participate.
RECOMMENDED TESTING
Blueprint and/or construction document reading and interpretation. Basic math and/or engineering skills test. DISC Profile.
EXPERIENCE
At least five to ten years experience in the Construction Industry or those dealing with the market niches for which Elford, Inc. participates or intends to participate.
