Position Summary
The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) provides comprehensive psychiatric and primary care services to patients across the lifespan. This role includes assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, medication management, and patient education in accordance with New York State statutes, regulations, and clinical protocols. The PMHNP collaborates closely with psychiatrists, nursing staff, counselors, and technical personnel to deliver high-quality, patient-centered mental health care.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide psychiatric patient assessments, diagnoses, and individualized treatment plans in compliance with professional statutes and protocols.
- Collaborate with staff psychiatrists, nurses, counselors, and technical personnel to coordinate patient care.
- Deliver psychiatric health services, education, counseling, and emotional support.
- Refer patients for inpatient care in collaboration with the staff psychiatrist when clinically indicated.
- Prescribe medications in accordance with treatment guidelines and regulations.
- Order, interpret, and explain laboratory tests and diagnostic results to patients.
- Educate patients on medications, risks, benefits, and expected outcomes.
- Maintain ongoing communication with patients and conduct follow-ups as needed.
- Provide primary medical care services when indicated and permitted by statute and protocol.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a Psychiatric/Mental Health emphasis from an accredited college or university.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience related to psychiatric nursing and advanced practice duties.
- Must hold an active Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) license in the State of New York.
