The Chesapeake Public Library (CPL) is seeking a dynamic and innovative Programming Librarian to join the Central Library team. This position plays a vital role in developing and delivering engaging, inclusive, and community-driven programs that serve patrons of all ages—from infants to older adults. The ideal candidate will bring fresh ideas, strong community connections, and a passion for designing programs that support the Library, including digital literacy, small business development, workforce readiness, and cultural engagement.

The Librarian serves as a member of the library’s management team and represents the library in all system initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate a wide range of library programs for diverse age groups, including early literacy, school-age enrichment, teen engagement, adult lifelong learning, and intergenerational events.
  • Design programs that advance system-wide priorities such as digital access, entrepreneurship, workforce development, and cultural awareness.
  • Lead outreach initiatives to strengthen community engagement, build partnerships with local organizations, and promote library resources and services.
  • Coordinate volunteer opportunities for teens and adults, including recruitment, training, scheduling, and recognition.
  • Provide reference and circulation support at all three service points, delivering exceptional customer service and resource guidance.
  • Serve as building supervisor, responsible for opening and closing the library, ensuring safety/security, and managing cash transactions accurately.
  • Collaborate with library staff across all branches to align programming with strategic goals and maintain consistency in service delivery.
  • Collect and analyze program data to measure impact, improve services, and report outcomes.


Will assist in other public service areas when needed.

Required Qualifications
Vocational/Educational Requirement:
Librarian I: Must be currently enrolled in a masters level Library Science degree program and must obtain a master’s degree in Library Science within 12 months of hire from a school accredited by the American Library Association
Librarian II: Requires an American Library Association accredited master’s degree in library science.
Librarian III: Requires an American Library Association accredited master’s degree in library science.

Experience:
Librarian I: None
Librarian II: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time public library experience, including 1-year supervisory experience.
Librarian III: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of four years of related, full-time public library experience including two years of supervisory experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses:
Librarian I – III: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record in compliance with the City Driving Standards.

Librarian I: Virginia Public Librarian Certificate required within three months after obtaining a master’s degree in library science.
Librarian II: Virginia Public Librarian Certificate required within three months of employment.
Librarian III: Virginia Public Librarian Certificate required within three months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience Requirement:
Librarian I:
  • No supervisory experience required, but one year is preferred.
Librarian II:
  • One year of supervisory experience required, but two years is preferred.
Librarian III:
  • Two years of supervisory experience required, but three or more years is preferred.

  • Public library experience preferred but other library experience considered. Related fulltime equivalent library experience or similar corporate retail or business experience within the last five (5) years considered.
  • Experience with demonstrated success in program planning, outreach, and community engagement.
  • Experience working with volunteers preferred.
  • Prior experience in reference and circulation services strongly desired.

Varied hours: Monday-Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 7:15 p.m. Friday-Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.

Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or city-wide emergencies. Emergency operations’ support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

The selected candidate may be transferred to work at another area library if and when a need arises.

An acceptable criminal history and Child Protective Services (CPS) reports are required.

An in-basket exercise will be administered to candidates that are selected for an interview.
