Job Description
The City of Chesapeake Public Works Engineering Department is seeking a highly motivated Construction Inspector to inspect public infrastructure projects and ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, contracts, and construction standards. The Construction Inspector will work closely with contractors, engineers, and City staff to support the successful completion of construction projects.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform construction inspections to ensure compliance with engineering plans, specifications, contracts, and City standards.
  • Review construction plans, shop drawings, and related project documents.
  • Coordinate with contractors and City personnel to resolve issues and maintain project progress.
  • Maintain accurate inspection records and project documentation.
  • Respond to inquiries from citizens, contractors, and City officials.
  • Identify problems and recommend effective solutions.


Qualifications:
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, engineering drawings, specifications, and shop drawings.
  • Knowledge of construction methods, materials, standards, and inspection practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations involving measurements, fractions, percentages, ratios, and geometry.
  • Ability to work independently in a field environment and provide clear direction when needed.

Work Environment:
The Construction Inspector works outdoors in all weather conditions and is frequently required to walk on uneven terrain, climb ladders, lift manhole covers, and work around construction-related noise, dust, and fumes. The Construction Inspector may also visit remote construction sites with limited access to public facilities.

Must possess or obtain within two years of employment:
  • Relevant DEQ Stormwater/Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector certification
  • VDOT certification for materials and construction
    • Asphalt Paving Certificate, Asphalt Plant Mix Design, Concrete Certificate, etc.

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standard, this position requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with the City’s Driving Standards; may require additional certifications. Depending on position, State and/or City certification(s) may be required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

Preferred Qualifications
  • DEQ Stormwater/Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector Certification
  • VDOT Certification for materials and construction (i.e. Asphalt Paving Certificate, Asphalt Plant Mix Design, Concrete Certificate, etc.), ACI
