Corrections Lieutenant – Jackson County, Missouri

Jackson County is seeking an experienced and proactive Corrections Lieutenant to join our leadership team within the Department of Corrections.
In this role, you’ll oversee correctional staff, inmate operations, and facility security across multiple housing floors—ensuring a safe, efficient, and professional environment.

What You’ll Do
- Supervise and manage all Sergeants, Master Corrections Officers, and Corrections Officers on assigned shifts.
- Oversee day-to-day detention operations and ensure compliance with all safety, security, and operational standards.
- Conduct staff briefings, assign duties, and monitor attendance and performance.
- Review and approve incident reports, logs, and documentation for accuracy and completeness.
- Coach, mentor, and train new and existing supervisory staff to maintain high team performance.
- Investigate staff or inmate concerns and take appropriate corrective actions.
- Administer progressive discipline and complete employee performance evaluations.
- Coordinate inmate movements for medical visits, court appearances, and visitation schedules.
- Oversee facility inspections for cleanliness, maintenance, fire safety, and security compliance.
- Conduct perimeter checks, alarm system reviews, and document all safety observations.
- Prepare operational and performance reports on a monthly and quarterly basis.
- Maintain accountability for facility keys, equipment, and inmate documentation.
- Reinforce departmental policies and recommend operational improvements.
- Respond to emergencies, disturbances, or critical incidents and ensure accurate reporting.
- Serve as Acting Captain during absences and assist command staff in decision-making.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required; Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field preferred.
- Minimum three (3) years of supervisory experience as a Corrections Sergeant or equivalent.
- Successful completion of the Jail Academy Exam and ongoing firearms qualification.
- Certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED.
- Must be at least 20 years old.
- Valid Missouri or Kansas Driver’s License and active telephone required.
- Must pass background check, drug screening, and MVR review.
- Availability for evening, weekend, and rotating shifts.

- Deep knowledge of facility security, inmate management, and safety protocols.
- Skilled in conflict resolution, de-escalation, and crisis management.
- Excellent communication, documentation, and report-writing skills.
- Proficient in BARIS, ALERT, and scheduling systems.
- Understanding of union agreements (MOUs) and employee relations processes.
- Ability to coach, train, and motivate teams to meet standards and expectations.
- Strong decision-making under pressure with integrity and fairness.
Working Environment
- Work performed inside a secure detention facility with frequent inmate contact.
- Exposure to stressful, high-risk, or confrontational situations.
- Possible exposure to communicable diseases and biohazards.
- Physical demands include standing, walking, or restraining up to 50 lbs.
- May require mandatory overtime, weekends, and emergency call-ins.
