Position Overview

The Financial Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial operations of the company, ensuring accurate reporting, strong internal controls, and financial discipline across projects. This role plays a critical part in project cost management, cash flow optimization, and strategic financial planning within a construction environment.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities Of Financial Controller

• Lead and manage all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and fixed assets
• Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
• Oversee job costing and project accounting to ensure accurate tracking of construction project performance
• Develop and monitor company budgets, forecasts, and financial models, including long-term planning
• Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and industry-specific requirements.
• Manage cash flow, including forecasting, working capital optimization, and banking relationships
• Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets
• Provide financial insights and recommendations to senior leadership for strategic decision-making
• Coordinate audits (financial and insurance) and ensure timely resolution of findings
  
  

Secondary Duties & Responsibilities Of Financial Controller

• Support bid pricing and contract reviews from a financial perspective
• Collaborate with project managers to analyze cost variances and improve profitability
• Oversee insurance, bonding, and risk management processes
• Improve and streamline financial systems, processes, and reporting tools
• Train and mentor accounting staff and promote continuous development
• Assist in evaluating capital investments, equipment purchases, and financing options
• Monitor compliance with contractual financial obligations and reporting requirements
  
  

Experience, Qualifications, And Education Of Financial Controller

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
• MBA and/or CPA (Certified Public Accountant) designation preferred
• Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive accounting or finance experience, with at least 3–5 years in a leadership role
• Prior experience in civil construction or utility construction strongly preferred
• Demonstrated expertise in job costing, percentage-of-completion accounting, and project-based financial management
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and construction-specific accounting practices
• Experience with ERP/accounting systems commonly used in construction (e.g., Viewpoint, Sage, or similar)
• Advanced proficiency in financial modeling, forecasting, and data analysis (Excel or similar tools)
• Proven leadership, communication, and team development skills
• Ability to work cross-functionally with operations, project management, and executive leadership
