The Financial Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial operations of the company, ensuring accurate reporting, strong internal controls, and financial discipline across projects. This role plays a critical part in project cost management, cash flow optimization, and strategic financial planning within a construction environment.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities Of Financial Controller
- Lead and manage all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and fixed assets
- Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Oversee job costing and project accounting to ensure accurate tracking of construction project performance
- Develop and monitor company budgets, forecasts, and financial models, including long-term planning
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and industry-specific requirements.
- Manage cash flow, including forecasting, working capital optimization, and banking relationships
- Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets
- Provide financial insights and recommendations to senior leadership for strategic decision-making
- Coordinate audits (financial and insurance) and ensure timely resolution of findings
- Support bid pricing and contract reviews from a financial perspective
- Collaborate with project managers to analyze cost variances and improve profitability
- Oversee insurance, bonding, and risk management processes
- Improve and streamline financial systems, processes, and reporting tools
- Train and mentor accounting staff and promote continuous development
- Assist in evaluating capital investments, equipment purchases, and financing options
- Monitor compliance with contractual financial obligations and reporting requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
- MBA and/or CPA (Certified Public Accountant) designation preferred
- Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive accounting or finance experience, with at least 3–5 years in a leadership role
- Prior experience in civil construction or utility construction strongly preferred
- Demonstrated expertise in job costing, percentage-of-completion accounting, and project-based financial management
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and construction-specific accounting practices
- Experience with ERP/accounting systems commonly used in construction (e.g., Viewpoint, Sage, or similar)
- Advanced proficiency in financial modeling, forecasting, and data analysis (Excel or similar tools)
- Proven leadership, communication, and team development skills
- Ability to work cross-functionally with operations, project management, and executive leadership

- Financial statements delivered on schedule with minimal errors or audit adjustments
- Cash Flow Performance
- Positive cash flow trends, reduced days sales outstanding (DSO), and optimized working capital
- Budget vs. Actual Performance
- Variance visibility maintained within acceptable thresholds with clear explanations and suggested corrective actions
