Under general supervision, checks motor carriers for compliance with the California Highway Patrol administrative regulations relating to safety, maintenance and operational practices; performs in-depth vehicle inspections for annual certifications, makes recommendations regarding granting of PUC operating authority; inspects carrier and shipper facilities for compliance with state and federal regulations pertaining to documentation of hazardous materials and wastes; prepares comprehensive written reports of inspections conducted; makes detailed investigations of vehicles involved in accidents to determine if the cause was mechanical; assists in preparation of complaints, reports and exhibits; and testifies as a witness in court.

This position is designated under the Conflict-of-Interest Code. The position is responsible for making or participating in the making of governmental decisions that may potentially have a material effect on personal financial interests.
