The Consumer Use Tax Section’s work processes are production oriented so you will immediately recognize the results of your hard work. The position will challenge your organizational and communication skills.
Under close supervision of a Business Taxes Administrator I, the Tax Technician I (TT I) will learn all facets of registration activities relating to private party purchases of vehicles, vessels, aircraft, and mobilehomes, including but not limited to:
• Screening source documents from other CDTFA divisions.
• Screening source documents from third-party agencies.
• Determining if a possible use tax liability exists.
• Creating new accounts.
• Sending contact letters.
• Scanning and uploading documents into our computer system.
• Creating and verifying use tax clearance forms.
• Reviewing the less difficult and less complex claims for exemption from use tax.
You will be tasked with the less difficult to less complex account registration and/or account maintenance duties including:
• Reviewing and processing taxpayer correspondence.
• Reviewing and determining the accuracy of taxpayer information.
• Searching and verifying taxpayer information using CDTFA systems.
• Searching and verifying taxpayer information using authorized external databases.
• Reviewing and/or updating taxpayer’s account information.
• Entering required data and/or information into the registration system.
• Initiating appropriate system generated letters.
• Processing requests for information from external agency systems.
• Securing and forwarding confidential records for destruction.
• Training other team members on these duties.

Under Government Code 14200, this position may be eligible for partial telework for eligible candidates residing in California. All telework/hybrid schedules require staff to report to the office a minimum number of days per week. Schedules are subject to change.
Currently, per the California Budget Act of 2025, all California Department of Tax and Fee Administration salaries are subject to the provisions of the State of California’s Personal Leave Program.
