Pay Schedule I, Grade 28, Regular Schedule: 35 hours per week A vacancy exists in the Department of Aging, Senior Centers and Wellness Division for a Senior Center Director. A list of eligible applicants will be established based on the examination as outlined below. Current and future vacancies occurring in this class may be filled from the list of eligible applicants. Examples of Duties Job Purpose Under general supervision, directs the operation of a senior center. Essential Job Duties Plans, implements, and coordinates programs and services for older adults in a regional senior center. Assures the safe operation, maintenance, and security of center equipment and facilities. Supervises support staff and volunteers. Prepares schedules of activities. Tracks expenditures and activities for budgetary purposes. Purchases materials, supplies, and equipment. Prepares reports and correspondence regarding center activities. Publicizes the center and other Department sponsored events. Recruits and trains volunteers. Assesses the needs of center members and the community at large. Evaluates center programs and services in response to identified needs and available resources. Assists senior center council in developing and conducting special events, activities, and community projects. Develops funding or community support for the program. Keeps records of program activities and expenditures for budgetary purposes. Prepares reports and correspondence regarding program activities. Examples of Other Duties: Leads or conducts center programs or activities. Interviews or counsels center or community members regarding personal needs and available resources for seniors. Responds to emergency situations at Senior Centers. Assists sick or injured senior adults until emergency medical personnel arrive at the scene. Performs other related duties as required. Qualifications Required Qualifications Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in gerontology, recreation, education, health, business administration, public administration, marketing, public relations, nursing specialty, accounting, or a social or behavioral science; Plus Two years' experience providing services to older adults. Additional experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of four years for the required education. Education beyond a bachelor's degree may be substituted on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years for the required experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Entry Level) Knowledge of older adults and their needs. Knowledge of planning, conducting, and evaluating programming, services, and activities for older adults. Skill in the provision and development of programming, services, and activities for older adults. Skill in assessing the needs of older adults and their communities. Skill in working effectively with older adults. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in using computers. Ability to recruit, train, and supervise senior center and/or program staff and volunteers. Ability to supervise the operation of a senior center or departmental program. Ability to learn County and departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Full Performance) Knowledge of County and departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Knowledge of departmental services and programs available to seniors. Knowledge of programs and services offered by other agencies. Skill in the supervision of senior center and/or program staff and volunteers. Skill in the supervision of a senior center or Departmental program. Proof of Licenses, Certifications and Education Applicants are required to submit proof of professional licenses, certifications, and education beyond high school to meet the required and preferred qualifications of the position. Diplomas or transcripts must show the applicant's major field of study. Copies and unofficial transcripts are acceptable. EXAMINATION PROCEDURE Applicants will be qualified based on an evaluation of their training and experience, as stated on their application, which includes answers to the supplemental questions. Conditions of Employment Licenses and Certifications Persons appointed to this classification must satisfactorily complete County sponsored CPR and First Aid training. These positions must maintain certification throughout employment. Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a noncommercial, class C Maryland driver's license is required at the time of appointment. Physical and Environmental Conditions The work of this classification entails frequent walking, standing, and other limited physical activity, including travel between work sites. Medical Examination and Employment Background Investigation Applicants selected for employment with Baltimore County must successfully complete a physical examination, drug screening, and employment investigation, including, but not limited to, criminal background, education certification, and fingerprinting checks.
