Position Overview:
We are seeking a Solar / Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Engineer to support a growing Energy practice across multiple office locations in the United States. This role offers flexibility to work remotely and/or from various office locations.
The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise in solar PV and BESS design, along with a solid foundation in power engineering. This individual will play a key role in delivering high-quality engineering solutions, supporting project execution, and contributing to both new and existing client relationships.
This position is best suited for a detail-oriented engineer who can work independently while collaborating with project teams and senior leadership.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead electrical engineering design for solar PV and BESS projects
- Collaborate with Project Engineers and Project Managers to develop design schedules and budgets
- Design solar PV systems including array layouts, DC string sizing, equipment layouts, and utility interconnections (rooftop, carport, and ground-mounted systems including fixed tilt and single-axis tracking)
- Perform solar energy production modeling
- Conduct BESS system sizing, technology selection, and controls design
- Develop construction drawings, specifications, and equipment documentation
- Perform engineering calculations (NEC compliance, conductor sizing, overcurrent protection, voltage drop, conduit sizing, etc.)
- Create one-line and three-line diagrams
- Develop Bills of Materials, cable and conduit schedules
- Support cost estimating and financial/payback analysis
- Design DC and low- to medium-voltage AC power distribution systems
- Support projects throughout the full lifecycle (feasibility, design, bid, construction, commissioning)
- Participate in client meetings and present engineering solutions
- Provide guidance to junior engineers and support team development
- Assist with technical proposals, budgeting, and scheduling
- Travel occasionally to project sites or client locations
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (or related field)
- 4 years of experience in solar PV system design
Preferred Qualifications:
- 8 years of experience in electrical engineering for commercial and utility-scale solar PV and BESS systems
- EIT or PE license (Electrical or Mechanical)
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, PVsyst, and Microsoft Excel
- Experience with industry tools such as NREL SAM, Helioscope, or similar modeling software
- Experience with battery energy storage systems and other renewable technologies
- Medium-voltage AC collection system design experience
- Strong knowledge of applicable codes and standards (NEC, IBC, NFPA 855, NESC, IEEE, etc.)
- Experience supporting full EPC or Design/Build projects from concept through completion
