Job Description:
The Chief Estimator is a full-time, on-site role based in Charlotte, NC, responsible for leading all estimating activities for electrical projects. This position prepares detailed cost estimates, reviews drawings and specifications, and analyzes labor, materials, and subcontractor requirements to ensure accurate and competitive bids. The Chief Estimator coordinates with project managers, engineers, and field leadership to clarify scope, assess risks, and support project planning. Daily tasks include managing the estimating pipeline, developing standard estimating procedures, reviewing vendor and subcontractor quotes, and maintaining cost databases. The role also involves mentoring estimators, participating in bid reviews, and collaborating with leadership on pricing strategies and business development opportunities.
Qualifications
- Strong electrical estimating experience, including reading blueprints, interpreting specifications, and preparing detailed cost breakdowns for commercial and residential projects.
- Proficiency with estimating software and tools, as well as MS Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook) for calculations, documentation, and reporting.
- Solid understanding of electrical codes, installation methods, and construction practices to evaluate scopes, risks, and constructability.
- Excellent analytical, numerical, and problem-solving skills for evaluating quotes, performing take-offs, and developing accurate budgets.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills to work with project managers, field teams, suppliers, and clients.
- Demonstrated leadership ability, including mentoring and guiding junior estimators and contributing to process improvement.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple estimates and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Relevant experience in electrical contracting or construction estimating; prior experience in a senior or lead estimator role is preferred.
- High school diploma required; associate or bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field is beneficial.
