Position Overview
This role is responsible for overseeing all accounting operations, financial reporting, payroll, compliance, and internal controls. The individual will ensure financial integrity, regulatory compliance, and alignment with organizational strategy and program funding.
This position reports directly to the CFO and will manage the Accounting Manager, AR Specialist, and Staff Accountant.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Ensure accuracy of general ledger, reconciliations, and closing processes
- Produce financial reports for senior leadership and board members
- Lead annual budgeting process and monitor budget vs. actual performance
- Provide variance analysis and strategic financial insights
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls
- Support audits (external/internal) and regulatory filings (e.g., Form 990)
- Oversee cash flow, reserves, investments, and banking relationships
- Ensure proper allocation of funds across multiple programs
- Track and report on diverse revenue streams (program fees, grants, partnerships, etc.)
- Support financial modeling and new program initiatives
- Identify financial risks and implement mitigation strategies
- Manage and develop accounting/finance staff
- Drive continuous improvement in processes and reporting
Required Qualifications (Non-Negotiable)
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance
- CPA required
- 8 years of nonprofit accounting experience
- Experience within a larger nonprofit organization strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting
- Proven experience overseeing audits, compliance, and internal controls
- Management experience required (will oversee Accounting Manager, AR Specialist, and Staff Accountant)
- Strong cross-functional communication skills
