Zap Energy is Hiring a Capacitor Design Engineer Near San Diego, CA
Zap Energy is currently looking for a Capacitor Design Engineer to assist in the design, development, testing, troubleshooting and production of high-power capacitors in San Diego. This individual will be involved in research and development of new capacitor technologies that will be utilized in Zap’s pulsed power fusion plants. As needed, this position will also work with Zap Energy scientific, engineering, and technical staff on the design, assembly, and ongoing Zap Energy SFS Z-pinch fusion system projects. The ideal candidate is experienced in research and development and is an open to taking on new challenges in product development to create novel pulsed power capacitor solutions for Zap Energy fusion technologies. The candidate should be a creative problem solver, capable of working through scientific challenges and employing sound, research driven solutions.Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer.Responsibilities and Duties:
Master capacitor design engineering practices to become capable of independently designing pulsed power capacitors
Plan, write and organize experimental plans, and clearly present on capacitor research achievements and results
Develop research plans to test and improve capacitor lifetime, repetition rate, and energy density for Zap’s fusion applications
Create a detailed set of capacitor manufacturing procedures and work instructions, using experimental data
Create design engineering rules documentation derived from experimental data
Create complete manufacturing design package including assembly instructions, test instructions and a complete bill of materials for the production of new Zap capacitors
Develop capacitor design software to optimize the capacitor design choice based on the derived design rules
Perform and optimize all aspects of capacitor manufacturing including capacitor windings, arc spray, soldering, impregnation, and test
Recurring travel to Everett, Washington to support fusion development
Qualifications and Skills:Required:
MS, or PhD. Degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Sciences, Chemistry, or Physics is desired
Minimum of 4 years of experience in a research and development environment with a proven track record of success
Experience developing scalable technologies in projects involving novel research
Experience with surface analysis techniques including SEM, SEM/EDX, Microscopy, etc.
Experience with electrical measurement techniques including Impedance Spectroscopy, conductivity, resistivity, etc.
Experience using diagnostic equipment including an oscilloscope, LCR meter, multimeter, High voltage probes micrometer, analytic balance, vacuum equipment
Works well in a team environment
Proven ability to finish milestone tasks on time
Outstanding attention to detail
Preferred:
Background in probability statistics
Experience in high voltage pulsed power testing at voltages over 40 kV and pulsed currents of up to 200 kA
Experience using circuit simulation software such as SPICE software
Analytical techniques such as ICP-MS, SEM-EDX, DSC, TGA, Karl Fischer titration
Characterization techniques such as UV-Vis, FTIR spectroscopy, etc.

The estimated salary range for this position is $120k-$175k. Candidates may be considered for other positions at Zap Energy and actual salary will be based on relevant education, experience, and other qualifications. Range is published in accordance with California pay transparency requirements.
