MISSION
YouthBuild DC Public Charter School (YouthBuild PCS) is an alternative high school for young people seeking to transform their lives by re-engaging in their education in a non-traditional school environment. YouthBuild PCS prepares students for post-secondary education and the workplace by offering, in English and Spanish, academic, vocational and workforce development programs.
YouthBuild PCS believes that service to the community is an essential part of the transformative process. Therefore, students serve their community through volunteer projects and by creating housing for low-income residents in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Teachers at YouthBuild PCS are responsible for creating a supportive, empowering learning environment. A teacher’s specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Curriculum and Instruction
● Teach adult basic education (ABE) classes to prepare students for the GED and successful transition into post-secondary education or the workforce
● Adopt and implement a highly individualized blended-learning model
● Collaborate with fellow teachers, instructional coaches, and the Director of Academics to develop robust, integrated Career Technical Education and General Education curricula
● Prepare and deliver engaging rigorous, and GED-aligned lesson plans based on assessment data and associated with individual academic goals
● Adhere to all data entry and reporting requirements and consistently use data to inform instructional design and strategies to improve student outcomes
● Differentiate instruction to accommodate multiple learning styles and abilities, including students with disabilities and English Language Learners
● Work closely with the Special Education department to effectively implement Individual
Education Programs (IEPs), track student progress, and participate in IEP teams
● Maintain classroom environment based on principles of positive youth development
● Commit to ongoing professional development in instruction, content and classroom management, including techniques for teaching opportunity youth
● Accept and promptly implement feedback from school leadership and instructional coaches
● Participate in professional learning circles and/or peer coaching sessions
Assessment
● Assess students’ ABE academic growth using online tools
● Track and monitor assessment results in order to regularly refine teaching practices and design individual learning plans
School Culture
● Support all school staff in implementing effective and consistent school-wide restorative practices, such as de-escalation strategies and restorative circles
● Create a positive learning environment that promotes high expectations and provides opportunities for all students to experience success
● Maintain positive, professional relationships with students and colleagues
● Communicate with students and school staff to ensure that students are on-track in their learning and making progress towards goals
● Collaborate with colleagues across YouthBuild’s departments to ensure multi-faceted development of each student
● Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Successful candidates will possess the following qualifications:
● Demonstrated commitment to YouthBuild’s mission to transform lives of DC opportunity youth
● Bachelor’s degree required; concentration or advanced degree in education preferred.
● Two or more years of experience teaching similar subject, preferably including knowledge of and experience with the revised GED
● Commitment to mentoring and educating opportunity youth, and belief that all students can achieve success
● Demonstrated ability to provide engaging and developmentally appropriate instruction while maintaining strong classroom culture
● Commitment to regularly assessing student progress and using data to strengthen student performance
● Demonstrated ability to engage diverse young adult learners, including those with disabilities and English Language Learners
● Familiarity with youth development principles and alternative high schools
● Strong cultural competency skills, including excellent ability to communicate with diverse students and staff
● Must be flexible, energetic, and resourceful
● Proficiency in Spanish required for Spanish GED program
