Position Summary:

The Security Guard position is responsible for safeguarding YWCA Central Alabama office, residential premises and the people in it by monitoring surveillance equipment, inspecting buildings and surrounding property and access points, and continual awareness of activity in and surrounding the facility.

Essential Functions:

  • Assume overall responsibility for the safety and security of designated area, during scheduled shift.
  • Actively monitor surveillance cameras.
  • Respond to alarms and safety and security threats on the premises.
  • Patrol and monitor hallways, stairwells, public and unsupervised areas in the building to ensure the safety and well-being of residents and staff.
  • Monitor the premises regularly to ensure nothing is out of place or individuals are not present who should not be on-site.
  • Identify potential security risks and respond accordingly.
  • Obtains assistance to manage complex situations through sounding an alarm or making a phone call. Escalate emergency situations or individuals with weapons to law enforcement, as needed. Liaise with law enforcement in the case of suspected or reported criminal activity.
  • Notify housing of any emergency, potentially dangerous, or unusual situations related to residents.
  • Assist maintenance staff in securing an area, during a maintenance emergency.
  • Minimizes loss and damage by reporting irregularities; informs violators of policy and procedures regarding being on and behaving inappropriately on the premises.
  • Verbally advise trespassers to exit the premises and advise of engagement of appropriate police immediately, when appropriate.
  • Complete written reports on accidents, incidents, suspicious activities, safety, and fire hazards, as well as, other security situation. Provide any other required documentation for all security or incidents, in a timely manner.
  • Display ethical and professional behavior at all times, while working with staff, visitors, residents, or members of the community.
  • Promote cooperation, collaboration, and flexibility, in working with others.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of standard security and safety protocols.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, including the ability to promptly and accurately report any unusual activities or otherwise report on events observed during each shift.
  • Ability to communicate and work well with socially and culturally diverse populations.
  • Ability to resolve conflict, solve problems, de-escalate situations, and use sound, independent judgement.
  • Demonstrable problem solving skills, ability to maintain calm and reason in unfamiliar situations, and respond quickly, when required.
  • Superior attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in high-pressure situations maintaining emotional control.
  • Ability to retain focus and concentration, during long periods of relative inactivity.
  • Comfort with use of security cameras and screens, and ability to assess observations made on those and other security mediums.

Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience:

  • A minimum of a High School degree or its equivalent and the ability to comprehend written, spoken, and verbal direction and conversation in English.
  • Minimum of one year previous security experience in a similar setting, preferred.
  • Security license greatly appreciated.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Superior honesty and integrity in all matters.
  • Ability to successfully complete a full background check; clean criminal history particularly where issues of ensuring safety of or appropriate treatment of others is concerned or issues of financial integrity.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment:

  • The relief position functions much like a substitute teacher; this individual will be on-call to fill-in for other YWCA Central Alabama Security Guards, who are not able to report to work. The schedule typically includes 12 to 24 hours per week and might include days, nights and weekends.
  • Duties may include the need to move quickly from one location to another, including running for a distance up to the length of a typical city block or more.
  • Must have excellent (20/20) vision naturally or with corrective lenses to see up close, distance, and peripherally. Must also have exceptional hearing with or without hearing aids.
  • Will be frequently required to stand, walk, and at times, run. Must be comfortable kneeling, bending, stooping, walking, running, and standing for an extended period of time. May occasionally be required to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
  • Working environment will include sitting for periods of time observing security screens in an alert and observant manner.
  • Must have reliable transportation, in order to arrive to work on time for assigned shift.
  • This person in this position will not be armed.
