POSITION SUMMARY:
The Matthew Camp Educational Assistant is primarily responsible for assisting the Educational Lead in the implementation and facilitation of the provided curriculum. The Educational Assistant reports to the Site Coordinator and assists in the supervision and in the education and social development of children ensuring a safe, enriching, and healthy learning environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Overarching Goal: Through their planning, actions and daily work creates and fosters a welcoming environment for all persons of all backgrounds and abilities and has a positive, nurturing relationships with staff and children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers and program partners. Promotes and supports the potential of all youth in programs and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall YMCA experience.

1. Attend trainings and staff meetings.
2. Support Educational Lead in instruction according to the provided curriculum model.
3. Meet daily with the teacher to review activities and ensure continuity of classroom support strategies.
4. Gather the appropriate resources for the curriculum.
5. Support the classroom according to the fidelity and quality requirements.
6. Set up for and clean up after all classroom activities.
7. Ensure 1:8 ratio is maintained throughout the educational portion of the day.
8. Proactively manage classroom behavior.
9. Support the teacher in meeting the individual needs of students (e.g., inclusion/accommodations, English language learner strategies).
10. Provide additional academic support, as needed.
11. Build relationships with parents/caregivers.
12. Assist the teacher in decorating the classroom space according to the weekly theme.
13. Take care of school property (e.g., space, equipment, supplies) daily.
14. Collaborate with enrichment leaders to ensure literacy instruction is aligned with enrichment activities.
15. Assist with dismissal to ensure student safety
16. Assist in other duties as assigned
17. Uphold and exemplify the YMCA’s core values and principles of character development.

SAFETY & COMPLIANCE
Child Abuse Policies & Prevention
The YMCA enforces its policies and practices to prevent child abuse.
Allegations or suspicions of child abuse are taken very seriously at the YMCA and will be reported to the proper authorities for investigation. We have abuse reporting procedures, there are unscheduled visits from supervisors, we have an open door for parents, and we have a code of conduct for staff. We minimize opportunities for abuse to occur and we talk with children about personal safety and touching limits. We screen carefully to prevent abusers from being hired. We provide child abuse prevention training to staff including how to conduct yourself for safe practices and termination of employment for employees who fail to report suspicion or failure to follow policies.
Employees who failure to support, actively engage in prevention and be forthcoming about concerns or violations of this policy will be subject to discipline, up to and including immediate termination of employment.

Background Check: A background check, criminal, work, and reference checks, will be required of any employee at hire and may be repeated during the course of their employment. A barred report, negative report or discovery of false information will result in immediate termination.

Alert & Focused: Use of illegal drugs, alcohol, prescribed or over the counter medications and lack of sleep can impact a person’s ability to be alert and focused while on duty. Used illegally or inappropriately while off duty may affect employment status. Responsibility, respect, caring, and honesty are core values of the YMCA. Employees involved in any injury found to be work related may be required to submit for a screening for drug and alcohol use. Suspicious behaviors observed while working or in the YMCA or at a YMCA program where the employee would be perceived by others as an employee may also be subject to alcohol and drug screening. Positive results of a drug or alcohol screening will result in termination of employment. Behaviors which are perceived to be unbecoming a YMCA employee may be subject to discipline up to and including immediate termination of employment.

Qualifications


QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. 1. Associate degree required.
2. A minimum of two years’ classroom experience in an early childhood or elementary education.
3. Exceptional group management, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
4. Experience in delivering instruction, creating, or facilitating interactive and educational/artistic activities, youth development, physical activities, academic enrichment, and the arts.
5. Must possess speaking, listening, and writing, skills appropriate for interacting with both children and adults.
6. Must have flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
7. Demonstrate a working knowledge of YMCA mission, purpose and goals, childcare policies, and YMCA standards; ensures the program meets the highest standards of excellence.
8. Have leadership competencies in the identified key areas
9. Ability to learn quickly.
10. Ability to work with integrity, discretion, and a professional approach.
11. Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.).
12. Ability to complete all required trainings within 60 days of employment, including but not limited to CPR, first aid, Living Our Cause, DCFS Mandated Report, IL Gateway Registry Modules and to maintain these certifications as current as outlined by regulations or requirements.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

May require physical effort and cardiac endurance while reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, balancing, bending, leaning, kneeling, walking, and climbing.
Specifically,
o Travel between multiple work sites within one workday.
o Walk extensively both within the YMCA facility and the programs supervised. It would not be unusual to walk 10,000 steps during a workday.
o Walking up and down stairs multiple times a day.
o Carrying supplies to and from work locations, normally lifting less than 25lbs.
o Playing large motor games with youth.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
