Position Summary:
The Zahava and Moshael Straus Center for Torah and Western Thought trains Yeshiva University students to be Modern Orthodox intellectual leaders who are well versed in both Torah and the Western canon. Through a combination of unique, interdisciplinary courses taught in collaboration with faculty from within and beyond YU, as well as communal events and publications, the Straus Center seeks to cultivate the intellectual, religious, and civic leaders of tomorrow.
At the forefront of the Center is the Straus Scholars Program, a competitive scholarship for Stern College for Women and Yeshiva College students that provides select students who display high academic achievement and leadership potential with courses, extracurricular programs, and small group seminars with visiting dignitaries and intellectuals. The goal of the highly selective program is to offer the aspiring intellectual leaders an unparalleled education through the study of the great works of the Jewish tradition in conversation with Western politics, art, literature and philosophy.
The Impact Officer will create and foster relationships at highly regarded think tanks, publications and government offices and utilize those relationships to best position Straus Scholars as applicants for internships and entry-level positions; and oversee continued educational development, professional and resource sharing for Straus Scholars alumni.
Position Responsibilities:
  • One-on-one mentorship meetings with Straus Scholars, in-person and remote, assistance with professional development
  • Assisting students in identifying extracurricular opportunities/engagement on campus
  • Assisting students in identifying semester and summer fellowships, internships, grants
  • Assisting students in writing projects, pitching pieces for publication in leading newspapers, magazines, and journals
  • Connecting students to professionals in the fields of policy, politics, journalism, and academia
  • Leading small-group reading group
  • Accompanying students on trips and to relevant conferences
  • Working with students to identify career objectives, pursue post-graduation professional opportunities
  • Weekly newsletter to Straus Scholars highlighting important opportunities, events, and relevant articles/publications
  • Liaising with external organizations and institutions to further mission and impact of the Straus Center as it pertains to the above
Experience & Education Background:
2-5 years experience in education, politics, journalism, public affairs or related fields
Skills & Competencies:
  • Strong project management skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to leverage technology and social media
  • Knowledge of, and contacts in, the fields of public affairs, journalism and politics
  • Knowledge of the Jewish community
