What You Will Be Doing:

As the Fleet Safety Manager, you will manage all aspects of the company’s safety and compliance efforts related to its motor vehicle fleet operations. You will work directly with team leaders across the company to develop, implement, and maintain driver procedures and training to help avoid motor vehicle accidents and DOT violations, as well as oversee the company’s investigation and response into any motor vehicle accidents and DOT violations that do occur. You will also be responsible for overseeing all DOT recordkeeping and reporting obligations.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Develop, implement, and maintain companywide Fleet Safety Program covering driver testing, training, and monitoring, among other things
  • Support business teams in the recruitment and evaluation of potential drivers, including reviewing background checks and Driver Qualification files and administering driving tests
  • Establish and manage new driver training and recurring driver training, including identifying and directing outside training resources as needed
  • Manage fleet monitoring systems (g., vehicle cameras, telematics data, mileage reports, pre/post trip inspection reports, etc.) and actively monitor systems to evaluate and address driver performance
  • Provide real-time support to drivers and their supervisors for handling accidents and DOT inspections
  • Investigate motor vehicle accidents and DOT violations to determine root cause and recommend corrective actions
  • Monitor driver drug and alcohol testing program (random, reasonable suspicion, and post-accident testing)
  • Maintain Driver Qualification files
  • Manage all aspects of DOT recordkeeping and reporting obligations
  • Advise company leadership on issues related to applicable federal and state regulations governing commercial vehicles
  • Work with vehicle fleet manager(s) to ensure company vehicles are safe and complian
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Participate in required safety program, and work in a safe manner.
  • Additional duties as assigned by VP.

Who We Are Looking For:

To be successful in this position you should have a comprehensive knowledge of FMCSA and DOT regulations and processes. You should possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. The ideal candidate would have previous experience as a commercial vehicle driver or DOT officer. 

Education/Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree, associate’s degree, technical certificate, or the equivalent combination of education and on-the-job training in the field of commercial vehicle safety or compliance
  • 5 years of experience as a fleet safety manager or similar role engaged in the applicable job responsibilities
  • Experience as a commercial vehicle driver or DOT officer a plus
Required Qualifications/Skills:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of FMCSA and DOT regulations and processes
  • Comprehensive knowledge of methods, techniques, and procedures involved in driver safety and compliance
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent analytical skills, problem-solving skills, and judgment
  • Strong strategic thinking skills
  • Ability to work on multiple initiatives and communicate/report/track progress
  • Ability to navigate conflict and build collaborative relationships
  • Ability to provide leadership, coaching, and mentoring to business teams
  • Ability to perform work and handle complex issues and problems under minimal supervision
  • Proficient PC skills (Word, Excel, video playback systems)
Preferred Qualifications/Skills:
  • Certified Transportation Professional (CTP) Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation or Certified Director of Safety (CDS) certification a plus
  • Commercial driver’s license (Class A or Class B) a plus
