Worcester Housing Authority is Hiring a Safety Coordinator Near Worcester, MA

POSITION TITLE: Safety Coordinator
DEPARTMENT: Human Resources
STATUS: Non-Exempt
SALARY: $65,000 - $75,000/year, dependent upon experience
POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting directly to Human Resources department, the Safety Coordinator is responsible for
planning, implementing and overseeing the agency's employee safety programs. The Safety
Coordinator’s main duty is to ensure that the company is in compliance with Occupational
Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines in order to reduce work-related injuries.
This is a full-time, onsite (not remote) position, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
with occasional overtime. Qualified candidates must have a valid, insurable driver’s license.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Plans and implements agency-wide and department-specific safety policies and programs.
2. Works with the WHA Training & Development Coordinator to prepare onboarding and

ongoing educational safety trainings, such as toolbox talks, seasonally-appropriate trainings,
use of PPE, safe storage of chemicals, and ergonomics training for office staff.

3. Creates, reviews, and updates safety policies and procedures.
4. Reviews and stays apprised of all pertinent safety rules and regulations and makes

recommendations for improving safety in the workplace.
5. Creates and regularly meets with a “Safety Committee” comprised of staff from various

departments and levels to identify and address employee health and safety concerns.
6. Works with the Purchasing Department to ensure all necessary safety equipment, including

PPE, first aid kits, and eye wash stations are well-stocked and maintained.
7. Investigates accidents that occur onsite and identify possible causes; works with the

workers’ compensation insurance carrier to develop resources to reduce injuries and
accidents.

8. Conducts risk assessments; regularly walks through properties to identify and observe
potential issues.

9. Enforces preventative measures and ensures all employees are adhering to safety
protocols; recommends corrective and disciplinary action as needed.

10. Works with OSHA as necessary to correct identified issues and oversees the corrective
action process.

11. Works with the WHA Grant Writer to apply for grant funding for safety training and
equipment as available.

12. Prepares and presents reports related to safety, trainings, accidents, and violations.
13. Acts as a liaison between WHA management and external safety agencies, such as OSHA,

fire, and insurance personnel.
14. Performs similar job-related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
1. High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree preferred.
2. Minimum of three (3) years of staff supervisory experience.
3. Minimum of five (5) years of experience working in building and facilities maintenance.

4. OSHA 30 certification preferred; ability to obtain OSHA 30 certification within one year
required.

5. Registration as a Certified Safety Professional or similar form of licensure preferred.
6. Extensive knowledge of building maintenance principles and practices; fire, safety, building

codes; and equipment, tools, supplies, chemicals and materials (including hazardous
materials) used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of buildings.

7. Understanding of federal, state and city safety requirements, including OSHA.
8. Leadership skills, including resourcefulness, ability to motivate teams, solve problems, and

think critically.
9. Interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish effective professional relationships with

employees and supervisors and to provide constructive feedback.
10. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and

presentation.
11. Proficient in using and learning computers and software programs, particularly Microsoft

Word, Excel, and Outlook.
12. Ability to review complex health and safety regulations and translate them into easily

digestible, understandable, policies and procedures for staff.
13. Position requires significant walking, climbing stairs, driving, working outdoors and indoors

and in all weather conditions, may be subject to heavy and strenuous work, and may
encounter undesirable pests. A candidate for this position must be able to meet all of these
requirements.

14. Valid, insurable driver’s license.
15. Ability to be relied upon to be available for work.
