The Wistar Institute is a world leader in early-stage discovery science in the areas of cancer, immunology, and infectious disease. Wistar is committed to accelerating research advances from bench to bedside through brilliant science and distinctive approaches to collaboration among scientific investigators and academic and industry partners. Wistar’s dynamic environment supports the advancement of discoveries that will change the future of human health.
The Wistar Institute is seeking a talented and motivated scientist at the postdoctoral level to join the Vaccine & Immunotherapy Center at The Wistar Institute in the laboratory of Dr. Ami Patel. Dr. Patel’s research focuses on vaccine and antibody development against emerging infectious diseases. We are using synthetic nucleic acid approaches to understand protection, with a focus on cellular and immune mechanisms of action. The successful candidate will lead projects aimed at understanding mechanisms that contribute to efficacy, including expression and potency of gene-encoded biologics, and modulation of immune responses. The research will incorporate a range of studies including gene expression profiling, immune profiling, and mouse model studies. Both basic research as well as translational studies are envisioned under this postdoctoral appointment.
Candidates should have or be close to obtaining a Ph.D. (or equivalent) degree with a background in one or more of the following disciplines: molecular biology, gene therapy, immunology, and/or virology. Applicants with experience in one or more of the following relevant areas are desirable: biotechnology, infectious diseases, molecular cloning, microscopy, flow cytometry, and mouse models. Applicants with experience with novel gene therapy methods including Crispr/cas9 systems, gene correction, and gene regulation are strongly encouraged to apply. Competitive applicants will have strong critical thinking, organizational and communication skills. The post-doctoral fellow will work closely with collaborators at Wistar, as well as external collaborators.
In addition to the online application, please submit a cover letter outlining research interests, a curriculum vitae, and contact details of three letters of references to Dr. Ami Patel, apatel@wistar.org.
The Wistar Institute is located in the University City area of Philadelphia, in the heart of the University of Pennsylvania Campus. Wistar provides resources to its faculty and staff that enable them to conduct cutting edge collaborative research and provides for outstanding intellectual environments and state-of-the-art facilities. Research discoveries conducted at Wistar have led to the development of vaccines; the identification of genes associated with cancers; and the development of many other significant research technologies and tools.
The Wistar Institute is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). All candidates must share our commitment to DEI. The Wistar Institute is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, mentoring, and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of our academic/research community.
