Position Opening

Summary of Position:

The Winthrop University Foundation (WUF) is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as its next Finance Director. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a track record of solid experience in managing financial operations in the nonprofit sector. Experience with institutions of higher education is a plus. The Finance Director will have day-to-day managerial responsibility for WUF’s accounting, budgetary and financial controls. Candidates must be licensed as a certified public accountant with a working knowledge of fund accounting according to GAAP and other regulatory requirements.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Finance Director serves as part of the management team. The successful candidate will serve as the point person for the finance department and will work closely with colleagues at Winthrop University, donors, board members and other constituents to support the University’s mission and strategic priorities.

This position should align with someone who is an organized multi-tasker who is able to manage a finance team while simultaneously managing large data sets in a fast-paced and collaborative environment. Compliance with all department and agency deadlines (i.e. month end, year-end) is critical. This position is a full-time, exempt position with benefits.

The Finance Director will carry out all managerial duties and responsibilities listed in the position description below.

Position Responsibilities:

Financial Management: 90%

Provide financial oversight for the organization and assume responsibility for a range of financial management, from daily operations to high-level management.

  • Oversee the annual budgeting processes and prepare the annual operating budget. Work with VP for Advancement, Foundation and Advancement staff and Foundation board to develop and implement program and organizational budgets.
  • Monitor fiscal performance versus operating for current period, investigating variances.
  • Prepare monthly balance sheet and statement of activities. Monitor, interpret and present financial results of operations and programs to Executive Director and Foundation Board at quarterly meetings and on an interim basis as needed. Oral presentations may be required.
  • Coordinate the annual audit with external auditor and finance staff to ensure that the agency is sufficiently prepared for the audit. Ensure timely reporting to the Foundation’s Board of Directors. Ensure the highest levels of fiscal management, governance, confidentiality, and transparency.
  • Collaborate and educate program directors (i.e. colleges, scholarship committees, Financial Aid) regarding budgets and funding opportunities. Analyze, distribute, and review monthly budget reports.
  • Oversee licensing, Secretary of State reporting, annual exemption certification, insurance and reporting requirements.
  • Oversee payroll, payroll liabilities and benefits, including PTO accrual and retirement plans.
  • Create and maintain excellent internal controls, policies and procedures.
  • Ensure efficient functioning and documentation for all financial systems including receipts, disbursements, billing, bookkeeping, budgeting and accounting.
  • Ensure the accurate and timely distribution of financial information for scholarships and University support. Work with Financial Aid and campus partners to achieve the seamless administration of scholarships. Prepare financial data for annual fund reports to donors.
  • Apply principles of endowment management and possess a good understanding of applicable laws and best practices. Exhibit a good working knowledge of accounting for investments and the application of endowment earnings. Serve as the point of contact with the OCIO.
  • Oversee the reconciliation of cash and investment accounts and pledges receivable.
  • Direct and review the preparation of interim and annual reports for all programs and departments on campus who utilize Foundation funds.
  • Manage and supervise the finance department staff who are responsible for the day-to-day financial reporting functions of the agency.

Operations: 10%

  • Work with Executive Director and colleagues to review and maintain organizational policies and procedures as needed. Work with colleagues in Division of University Advancement to develop and implement division mission and goals.
  • Remain current on non-profit accounting and management laws and best practices.
  • Encourage professional development for direct reports and provide leadership and mentoring when needed.
  • Develop and maintain external relationships with colleges, departments and other constituents to provide superior customer service.
  • Strive for continuous improvement in all areas of Foundation operations.
  • Other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

Qualifications:

Candidates should demonstrate a strong background in accounting and finance, a track record of non-profit management experience and a commitment to donor stewardship. Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite with particular emphasis on Excel. Experience using financial management/accounting software. Experience in Blackbaud Raisers Edge and Financial Edge preferred.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required (business, nonprofit management, accounting, finance). A master’s degree is preferred and CPA licensure is required.

Experience:

Minimum of three years of nonprofit experience required. Demonstrated record of experience in nonprofit finance and accounting functions is critical.

Leadership and Management:

Capacity for managing and leading people effectively, ability to connect with staff both individually and in large groups and the capacity to enforce accountability when needed. Ability to develop and empower leaders from the bottom up and lead from the top down with a strong commitment to follow-through and high emotional intelligence.

Organizational Development and Leadership:

Ability to think strategically, anticipate future consequences and trends and incorporate them into the organizational planning. Ability to think creatively about staffing and organizational structure.

Human Resources:

Experience implementing HR policies, managing performance reviews and evaluations and remaining informed about HR laws and best practices.

Pay: $75,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
