Position Overview
Position Summary
Overview: We seek one postdoctoral research associate (PRA) to play a central role as Project Director in our recently funded 1.3 million Chan Zuckerburg Initiative project titled School and Community Driven Validation of a School-Based Racial Stress and Trauma Measure and Integration into a Technology Platform. The goal of this study is to use mixed-methods to further develop and empirically validate a measure assessing racial stress and trauma experiences at school among Black youth. The project will engage translational science efforts by integrating the validated measure into a technology platform – Discriminology (built and owned by Black teachers, researchers, and engineers) – in order to allow families, schools, and other educational stakeholders to visualize racial disparities in the public education system through a school accountability report card tool. Our project team will work collaboratively with Discriminology to assess how educators, parents, youth, and school leaders can use the visualization data from the school accountability report card to collectively plan actions toward equitable school change.
All activities are conducted under the supervision and advisement of Dr. Charity Brown Griffin (PI) licensed psychologist and nationally certified school psychologist, in the Department of Psychological Sciences at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU). The PRA will also work closely with Village of Wisdom (Durham, NC) and Durham Public County Schools (Durham, NC) who are both collaborative partners on this project. Opportunities exist for additional collaborative and independent research projects and/or support in clinical pursuits related to school psychology practice may be available if needed.
Job Requirements
Responsibilities: The PRA will conduct mixed-method research on scale development and validation with Black school-age youth using school and community-driven processes. This person will contribute to project planning, collection, analyses, and dissemination of the data through presentations at professional conferences, and publications. In addition to research responsibilities, the PRA will train and mentor undergraduate students in research. The PRA may contribute to teaching within the Department of Psychological Sciences, if desired.
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, consistent with System Office policy. UNC System employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a 2-hour commuting distance of their assigned duty station (Winston-Salem, NC).

Desired/Preferred Qualifications: Candidates with a PhD in School, Clinical, Developmental, Educational, or Community Psychology. Prior work in school- and/or community-based data collection is preferred, and research with and/or on Black school-age youth is preferred. Term: This is a full-time position with benefits. The initial term is for one year, beginning July 1, 2024. Postdoctoral awards may be up to 30 consecutive months (through December 31, 2026), given continued successful progress.
